Two drug traders killed in gunfight with police

Two suspected drug traders were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Sabrang union of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar in the early hours of Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Abdur Rashid, 47, son of Enam Sharif of Sabrang Kuchbunia and Abul Kalam, 35, son of Abdur Rahman of Katabonia of the upazila.

Police claimed that the deceased were listed in the Ministry of Home Affairs as drug dealers.

Pradeep Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 2am.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on them, prompting them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.

Police later found Rashid and Kalam dead on the spot.

Sub-inspector Borhan Uddin, assistant sub-inspector Forhad, constable Hridoy were injured in the incident.

Five locally-made weapons and 22,000 pieces of Yaba tablets were recovered from the scene.
