Rape accused killed in Chittagong 'gunfight'

A person accused in a rape case was killed in a reported ‘gunfight’ with police in Mariners Road area under Chittagong's Kotwali Police Station at midnight on Monday.

Police also arrested another person accused in the case.

The deceased was identified as Shahabuddin and the name of the arrestee is Shyamal. Both of them are drivers by profession.

Kotwali Police Station Officer (OC) Md Mohsin told RTV Online that Shahabuddin and Shyamol abducted a madrasa female student on January 27 and raped her at gun point.

On Monday, they tried to abduct the girl again. Being informed, police managed to capture a vehicle while they managed to flee the scene.

Later, police conducted a drive in Chakbazar DC Road area on the night and arrested Shyamal.

Based on the information provided by the arrestee, a team of police went to Firingibazar area of Jamal Khan on Mariner's road to catch Shahabuddin.

Sensing law enforcers’ presence, Shahabuddin fired at police and in retaliation, they also fired back, triggering a gunfight.

Later, Shahabuddin was found bullet-hit on the spot.

Three policemen were injured in the operation and arms and ammunition were recovered from the scene, the OC said.
