An average of 300 people are killed by lightning in Bangladesh every year. 74 people died due to lightning in 38 days from April 1 to May 8. Among them, 31 people died due to lightning in April. Of them 20 are men and 11 are women. In addition, 43 people died due to lightning in the eight days of this month. Among them 34 men and 9 women. 35 of those killed by lightning in the last 38 days are farmers. Such information has emerged in the report of the research cell of voluntary social organization Save the Society and Thunderstorm Awareness Forum (SSTAF).

The organization released the report on Thursday (May 9) while conducting an awareness program among farmers who are busy in harvesting paddy.

To protect the lives of the farmers, the organization urged the farmers working in the field to follow three points of advice. Besides, the members of the organization also told the strategy of how the farmers can keep themselves safe in case of lightning.

Advice to farmers:

1. If they are under the open sky, take shelter in a safe place as soon as they see dark clouds in the sky.
2. Do not stay under trees during rain. And
3. Wearing shoes when working under the open sky and lying down in case of lightning while in the field.

President of the forum Kabirul Bashar said, many people think that it is safe to take shelter under a tree during lightning, but it is not true. Shelter should be taken in houses or under paved structures.

According to him, installing lightning arresters in the traditional way can prevent casualties due to lightning. It costs less. It can be installed in any house by spending 10 thousand taka. Government may take initiative to set them up in Haor and open places.
