Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Kazi Habibul Awal said that the voter turnout was slightly lower than expected due to storm-rain and paddy harvesting season.

He said this at the Election Commission after voting in the first phase of the sixth upazila parishad election on Wednesday (May 8).

The CEC said 30 to 40 percent votes were cast, slightly less than the commission's expectations due to storms and rains and paddy harvesting season.

He said barring some stray incidents, free and fair elections were held across the country. Voting has been stopped due to allegations of irregularities in two centers.

Meanwhile, the CEC avoided answering reporters' questions about the low voter turnout due to voters' reluctance.
