Bangabazar shopping complex fire: 'Damage over 1000 crore'

Md Helal Uddin, the president of Bangladesh Shop Owners Association, said, "Due to terrible fire in Bangabazar shopping complex, the damage may be more than 1 thousand crore taka."

Arriving at the scene on Tuesday afternoon, he said, "The situation here is very dire. All the shops in Tin-shed Market have been burnt to ashes."

One of the most popular clothing markets in the capital for retailers and wholesalers, this market had about 2500 shops.

Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, the traders were picking up goods worth a lot of money. Usually, all types of clothes including saree, shirt, pant, salwar kameez are sold there.

Md Helal Uddin said, "On the occasion of Eid, the traders have invested hundreds of crores of taka."

He said, "In the fire that happened this morning, the amount of damage will be more than 1 thousand crore taka."

However, the amount of damage have not been received from the shop owners of Bangabazar yet.

Journalists spoke to some traders and learned that they have invested between taka 1 crore and a maximum of taka 5 crore in their shops.

Point to be noted that the fire service received information about the fire at around 6:10 this morning.

A total of 50 units work to control the fire. Support teams from Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force joined to control the fire. Helicopters were also used to extinguish the fire.
