Sadeka Halim appointed as VC of Jagannath University

Professor Sadeka Halim has been appointed as the new vice chancellor of Jagannath University (JnU).
Currently, she is serving as the chairperson of the sociology department at Dhaka University.
Professor Halim's appointment was announced in a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Education on Thursday. Honorable President Mohammed Shahabuddin made the appointment for the next four years.
Professor Sadeka Halim holds the distinction of being the country's first female information commissioner and she was a member of the National Education Policy Formulation Committee-2010.
She began her teaching career at Dhaka University in 1988. She also earned her PhD from McGill University in Canada.

Schools and colleges to remain closed for 7 days
Heat alert has been issued in various parts of the country due to severe heatwave. In this situation, the Directorate of Secondary & Higher Education has extended the holidays of all secondary schools and colleges in the country till April 27 considering the health and safety of the students.
This information was given in a notification from the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education on Saturday (April 20).
According to the notification, primary and secondary schools will remain closed for seven days from Apr 21 to Apr 27.
In this regard, Mahbubur Rahman Tuhin, senior information officer at the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education said that secondary level schools and colleges will remain closed till April 27 due to the heatwave. Regular classes will begin on April 28.
Earlier, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education announced the closure of the primary school assembly through a notification due to the ongoing heatwave in the country.

DU classes to be held virtually amid heatweave
Dhaka University (DU) authorities have decided to hold classes virtually until further notice due to the ongoing heatwave.
The university authorities made the announcement on Thursday (21 April).
According to a press release issued by DU today, the online classes will be held until further notice.
However, the residential halls at the university will remain open, Prof Sitesh Chandra Bachar of DU said.

GST Admission test starts today, special measures around heatwave
In this 2023-24 academic year, twenty-four universities, including GST institutions, are set to conduct the first-year admission test for the fourth time in a cluster system.
Admission test for 'A' unit will be held on Saturday (April 27) from 12 noon to 1 pm. On the same day Architecture Practical (Drawing) will be taken from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm.
Besides, the examination of 'B' unit under the Humanities group will be held on Friday, May 3 and the examination of 'C' unit under the Business Management will be held on Friday May 10. The admission test of these two units will be held from 11am to 12 pm.
On the occasion of the admission test, the overall preparation has already been completed. Meanwhile, special attention is being paid for the safety of the students during the ongoing heatwave.
The Vice Chancellor of Jashore University of Science and Technology Prof. Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain said that all the Universities have been requested to take proper precautions during the heatwave. At the same time he is calling upon the Vice-Chancellors of the concerned Universities under the cluster to provide sufficient fresh water and first aid in the examination centers for the protection of the admission candidates.
This year, 3 lakh 5 thousand and 346 applications have been submitted against a total of 21 thousand seats under cluster system. Accordingly, 15 aspirants will fight for each seat.
In this year, cluster admission test application was open from 12-27 February. During this period, 1 lakh 70 thousand 599 applications have been submitted in 'A' unit of science group, 94 thousand 631 in 'B' unit of humanities group and 40 thousand 116 applications in 'C' unit of business management.
Primary schools to reopen across Bangladesh from Sunday
Primary schools across the country will reopen from Sunday (April 28), the day also scheduled for reopening high schools and colleges amid the ongoing heat wave across the country.
This information was given in a notification sent by Mahbubur Rahman Tuhin, Senior Information Officer of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education on Saturday noon.
According to the notification, the class time has been reduced from 8am to 11:30am. Class activities will continue in government primary schools from April 28.
However, the schools with one shift will complete Class activities from 8:00am to 11:30am. The schools with two shifts will complete Class activities between 8:00am and 9:30 for the first shift and between 9:45am and 11:30am for the second shift.
A notification from the Ministry of Education on Thursday (April 25) said that class activities will continue on Saturdays of every week until further instructions to meet the learning deficit created due to the closure of class activities due to heat wave and other reasons and to achieve learning results according to the new curriculum.
Educational Institutions reopening, some instructions to be followed
A severe heatwave is blowing throughout the country. Considering the situation, the Meteorological Department has issued a 'heat alert'. Meanwhile, all educational institutions of the country are opening today. Classes are going on as usual in secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical institutes. Primary schools have also been opened with some changes in the schedule. However, some precautionary measures are being taken in opening educational institutions.
Though schools and colleges are open from today, there are some instructions. Morning shift in primary will be from 8 am to 9.30 am and the second shift will be from 10.30 am to 11.30 am. But pre-primary will be closed. And assembly will not take place until the heatwave drops. The information was given in the press release from the ministry on Saturday.
Shah Shamim Ahmed, associate professor of Dhaka University IER department said that there is no problem with this decisioin of the ministry. However, care must be taken to ensure that students do not suffer in heat. Cold water, adequate ventilation should be provided. No one should get sick.
Sohel Atol receives Dhaka Sub Editors Council Literary Award
Journalists' organization Dhaka Sub Editors Council has started the process of awarding literary awards to writers every year.
Journalist and writer Sohel Atol received the literature award in the story-novel category this year. He won this literary award for his biography of singer Asif Akbar "Akbar Fifty Not Out".
The award was announced at the organization's biennial conference at the National Press Club today, April 28. The literary award was announced in the presence of former president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, president of Dhaka Sub Editors Council Mamun Farazi and other leaders of journalist organizations.
Accepting the award, journalist and writer Sohel Atol said, “It is a pleasure to receive the award. Inspirational for the writer. Expressing gratitude to Dhaka Sub Editors Council and Jury Board.”
This year Dhaka Sub Editors Council Literary Award was given to various writers in children's literature, translation, short stories-novel, and poetry categories. Selina Hossain, the famous novelist of the country, served as the head of the jury board.
