Barrister Nazmul Huda, former communication minister of the BNP-Jamaat alliance government, has secured bail from the Supreme Court's Appellate Division in a case filed for taking bribe.

The four-member Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order on Monday.

Earlier, Nazrul Huda filed a leave-to-appeal petition with the Supreme Court against the High Court's verdict. He also applied for bail.

In the court, AF Hasan Arif, Mansurul Haque Chowdhury and Advocate Sigma Huda stood for him while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan was on behalf of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).

Huda’s lawyers said there is no legal bar now to release him from jail.

On surrender before the court on January 6, the judge of Special Judge-2 Court of Dhaka ordered to send Huda to jail, rejecting his bail plea.

The lower court granted Nazmul Huda seven years imprisonment in the case filed for taking bribe money worth Tk 2.4 crore. In 2017, the High Court commuted his sentence to four years imprisonment.

The former minister joined Awami League-led alliance ahead of the eleventh parliamentary election. He, however, did not get nomination from the alliance and later, he participated in the polls as an independent candidate from Dhaka-17 constituency.
