Shahriar Alam called for unlocking potentials of regional connectivity

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam emphasized on deepening relations in the region for shared prosperity through regional connectivity where the Bay of Bengal is the common strategic interlocutor.

He expressed this in his remarks delivered as Special Speaker at the ‘Third India-Japan Intellectual Conclave’, at an event organized at Agartala jointly by Assam based influential think tank Asian Confluence, Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Bangladesh Mission in Agartala and the Embassy of Japan in India.

The State Minister gratefully recalled the crucial role played by India particularly the people of Tripura during the War of Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971 that Bangladesh waged under leadership of led by the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Mr. Shahriar Alam highlighted the transformative changes in the bilateral ties between Bangladesh and India in the recent years under the leadership of Prime Miniser Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He added that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina always advocated regional and sub-regional cooperation.

With its advantageous geographic location between South and South East Asia, and the Bay of Bengal to the south, Bangladesh was working to establish itself as the regional hub of connectivity.

He said that implementation of the BIMSTEC Master Plan for Transport Connectivity would be instrumental for further economic development in the region.

Mr. Shahriar Alam termed big infrastructural projects of Bangladesh such as the Padma Multipurpose bridge, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel under the river Karnaphuli, the Matarbari deep seaport, the Payra deep sea port, third Terminal of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, Padma Bridge Rail Link Project as engine of growth of the region.

The State Minister said that Bangladesh envisions a free, open, peaceful, secure, and inclusive Indo-Pacific which was a core area of global politics and key determinant of long-term prosperity of South Asian Region. An important constituent of the Indo Pacific, the Bay of Bengal can change the fate of the greater Bay of Bengal community including South Asia.

The State Minister elaborated how the connection of North East India with mainland India and access to the Bay of Bengal using Bangladesh territory and her sea ports would bring phenomenal change in the prosperity in this region. He appreciated the greater involvement of Japan for undertaking Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt for the infrastructural developments of Bangladesh.

The State Minister called upon the political leadership of this region at all levels to be visionary about the bright prospect. He emphasized that greater benefits of the people should not be allowed being hostage to political considerations. He expected that Bangladesh’s neighbor would reciprocate the way Bangladesh is coming forth to allow her territory for use of her neighbours.

State Minister Shahriar Alam was speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day long event as Special guest together with the Indian Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, Culture and Tourism Shri G Kishan Reddy; Minister of State for External Affairs Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh; Industries and Commerce and Welfare of OBCs Minister of Tripura Smt. Santana Chakma; and Japanese Ambassador to India Mr. Hiroshi Suzuki.

State Minister Shahriar Alam who arrived Tripura today is expected to meet the Chief Minister of Tripura Prof. Dr. Manik Saha tomorrow before he returns to Dhaka.

PM to visit Thailand Wednesday to sign 6 MoUs

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to visit Thailand on Wednesday (24 April) for 5 days. During her visit, six agreements and Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) to be signed between two countries on various issues including defense co-operation. This is the first bilateral visit of a Prime Minister of Bangladesh to Thailand after the establishment of diplomatic relations. On the occasion of PM Sheikh Hasina's visit, the foreign ministries of the two countries issued a joint statement last week. The visit is significant for both Bangladesh and Thailand in the context of opening a 'new window of co-operation' between two countries.

Qatar Emir arrives in Dhaka for a two-day visit

Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani has come to Dhaka on a two-day visit at the invitation of President Md. Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He arrived at Shahjalal International Airport at 5 pm on Monday (April 22). Six deals between Qatar and Bangladesh and five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are to be signed. The agreements are- avoidance of double taxation, co-operation about law issues, co-operation about maritime transport, development and protection of investments, transfer of convicts, and formation of joint business councils. The MoUs include- MoUs on manpower, port management, higher education and scientific research, co-operation of youth and sports and co-operation of diplomatic training. 'It is very important to visit the Qatae Emir for ensuring fuel security. There will be a multipurpose discussion about fuel between two countries. Apart from this, Qatar has a huge amount of sovereign wealth fund that can be a potential source of investment for Bangladesh. Alongside with, Qatar is one of the most important source of fuel for Bangladesh,' Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said at a press conference on Sunday (April 21).

Heatstroke, 4 instructions from Health Department

The country is burning in intense heat. The ongoing heatwave may continue for a few more days, said the meteorological department. In this situation, the health department issued 4-point instructions to reduce the risk of heatstroke. According to a news bulletin, there remains an intense heatwave sweeping over the country. In this situation, there is no substitute for causion to stay healthy. The instructions are- 1. Stay away from intense heat, rest occatioally in the shades. 2. Drink plenty amount of safe water. Avoid street food and drinks to avoid deadly water borne disease including Hepatitis A,E, Diarrhoea. Bath more than once if necessary. 3. In hot weather, wear light color, loose fitting clothing, avoid dark color clothing if possible. 4. In hot weather, if any symptoms occurs such as cessation of sweating, nausea, severe headache, increase body temperature, decrease urination, burning sensation during urination, convulsions and fainting, go to the hospital immediately to seek medical advice. Alongside, using umbrella, cap and sunglasses must be ensured while performing duties outside. Adequate amount of pure water should be consumed slowly and cold water should be avoided.

A Tribute to Sher-e-Bangla from Prime Minister

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday recalled the contributions of Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Haque, recalled his struggle for economic freedom of the peasants and toiling people of the country, and prayed for eternal peace of his departed soul. She paid rich tributes to the late leader's Shrine at the historic Sohrawardi Udyan. PM paid this tribute on the occasion of his 62nd Birthday. Awami League General Secretary and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader paid tribute to Sher-e-Bangla by laying flowers at the tomb at 8 am on Saturday (April 27). Later central leaders paid tribute on behalf of Awami League. After finishing that, central leaders keeping silence for 1 minute. IOM Director General Amy Pope is coming to Dhaka

United Nations International Organization of Migration (IOM) Director General Amy Pope is coming to Dhaka. She is coming to visit Bangladesh on Sunday (May 5). Migration and Rohingya issues will be prominent during her visit. It is known that the heads of various United Nations organizations will visit Dhaka on the occasion of 50 years of relations. The visit begins with IOM Director General Amy Pope. According to the sources in the Ministry of Foreign affairs, IOM Director General will visit Bangladesh from May 5-9. Amy will begin her tour by visiting a Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar. According to Diplomatic sources, Natalia Kanem, the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will visit Dhaka in the middle of this month. Apart from this, Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary General of International Maritime Organization is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka at the end of this month. During the visit to Dhaka, IOM Director General have a courtesy call with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud. Amy will also hold a meeting with Expatriate Welfare and Foreign Employment Minister Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury.
