Election in Fakhrul’s vacant seat after Eid: EC Secretary

Election Commission (EC) has said that voting will take place in Bogura-6 constituency after Eid ul Fitr which was declared vacant as BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir did not take the oath as Member of Parliament.

EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed delivered the information to the newsmen at his office at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital on Sunday.

He said, there is legal obligation of holding election within 90 days if any parliament seat is declared vacant. We have informed the matter to the commission. The schedule for by-election will be declared soon after the commission decision.

Helal Uddin Ahmed said, voting will take place in this seat soon after the Eid. We want to complete the election within the month of June. Because, incidents of raining increase in July. There is also a matter of rainy season.

While replying to a question the EC Secretary said, BNP will get one reserved seat in the Jatiya Sangsad against their five seats. We will ask the party to name the member within next seven days. In this regard name of the candidate has to be submitted to the Returning Officer. We will publish the gazette when Returning Officer would say that all the papers are all right.

In the eleventh national parliament election BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected from Bogura-6 constituency. As BNP Chairperson was in jail then Mirza Fakhrul took part in the election from her constituency. But the EC declared the seat vacant on April 30 as he did not take the oath in the stipulated time. Although other five BNP elected Members of Parliament took the oath.
