BNP leader Tariqul Islam passes away

After suffering from different diseases for long time BNP standing committee member Tariqul Islam passed away. (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He breathed his last after 5 pm at the Apollo Hospitals in the capital while undergoing treatment.

BNP Chairperson’s press wing member Shairul Kabir Khan confirmed the matter to Rtv online.

Tariqul Islam was 72 years old.

As his physical condition deteriorated Tariqul Islam was shifted to Coronary Care Unit (CCU) on Friday. He was suffering from kidney complexities, diabetes, breathing problems and other health related problems. He was given treatment in Singapore several times over the years.

Tariqul Islam was the information and environment minister during the four-party alliance government. He served different important posts of BNP including vice president before being standing committee member.

Tariqul Islam was born in November 16, 1946. He was associated in politics from his student life. He was a student of Jashore MM College. He was elected general secretary of MM College students’ council as a candidate of Chhatra Union in 1963-64. He was imprisoned in Jashore and Rajshahi jail for long 9 months for taking part in anti Ayub Khan movement in 1968. He was arrested in 1969 for leading the mass uprising in Rajshahi University.

Tariqul Islam, who obtained his masters degree in economics under Rajshahi University was associated with left progressive political affairs. Known as a follower of Maulana Bhasani, he joined BNP through Jatiyatabadi Ganatantrik Dal (Jagodal) from NAP Bhasani during the tenure of Ziaur Rahman. Tariqul Islam was among the 76 member first convening committee of BNP led by Ziaur Rahman. He was given the responsibility as convener of Jashore district BNP. He also served as the joint secretary general, acting secretary general, vice chairman of the party. He was given the post of standing committee member in the fifth national council held in 2009.
