35,000 houses destroyed, 3.75 million people affected: State Minister

Cyclone Remal has affected 37 lakh 58 thousand people across the country. In addition, about 35,000 houses were destroyed. At the same time, 1 lakh 14 thousand 900 houses have been partially damaged.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Muhibur Rahman said this at a post-cyclone press conference at the Secretariat on Monday (May 27).

He said 914 unions and municipalities in 107 upazilas of 19 coastal districts, including Khulna, Satkhira and Patuakhali districts, have been affected by the cyclone. However, due to the government's preparations, there was no major damage. So far 10 people have been reported dead in the cyclone.

The state minister said Tk 6.85 crore has already been provided to the victims. Of these, Tk 3.85 crore in cash, 5,500 metric tonnes of rice and 5,000 packets of dry food have been provided in 15 districts. Besides, Tk 1.5 crore has been provided for the purchase of baby food. These assistance will go to the mobile accounts of the victims.

Muhibur Rahman said 9,424 shelter centres have been opened in the risky areas. About 800,000 people have taken shelter in these shelter centres or permanent educational institutions.
