At least 30 fishermen went missing after 10 trawlers capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Kutubdia in Coxbazar. Baraghop Union Chairman Abul Kalam of Kutubdia Upazila and Fishermen League Federation Kutubdia Branch President Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the matter on Wednesday, August 2. Sailors told, A sudden stormy wave started in the morning while they were fishing at sea. At this time the trawlers started coming back.  But sank more than 10 fishing trawlers along with their crew.

Death toll reached 41 and at least 38 others remained missing in the boat capsize in the Karatoya River near Auliya Ghat under Boda upazila in the district. In the rescue operation, 17 bodies have been recovered till filling of the report this afternoon since the morning today after a boat capsized in the Karatoya River on Sunday afternoon, Boda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sujoy Kumar Roy said. Among the deceased, 22 are women, 11 children and eight men. Earlier, 24 bodies were recovered after a boat carrying over a hundred passengers beyond its capacity capsized in the river in northern Panchagarh district.   Passengers were going to Badeshwari temple on the occasion of the celebration of Mahalaya, the auspicious occasion heralding the advent of goddess Durga.   Deputy Commissioner (DC) Zahurul Islam said a five-member probe committee has been formed to look into the incident and the committee has been asked to submit its report by three working days. The bodies of those identified have been handed over to their relatives, the DC added. The incident of boat capsize occurred on the river Karotoa at Boda upazila under Panchagarh district leaves at least 24 dead. More than 30 people are still missing in the accident. The accident occurred at Auliaghat area under Mareya union in the upazila on Sunday afternoon. According to the local inhabitants, the passengers of the boat were on their way to Bodeshwai temple to participate worship on the eve of Mahalaya puja. The boat was overloaded and when it reached on the middle of the river it sank. Some manage to save their lives by swimming but most of the passengers drowned. They were the inhabitants of Panchpeer, Boda, Mareya, Benghari and adjacent areas. Boda upazila health and family welfare officer Raziur Rahman Razu said, seven dead bodies were taken to the hospital. In this regard Deputy Commissioner of Panchagarh Jahurul Islam informed that 17 dead bodies are at the upazila health complex. Rescue operation is still going on. AH     

More 22 dead bodies were recovered from the launch that capsized in the river Shitalakkhya yesterday after being hit by a goods laden cargo. The launch was salvaged to the bank of the river with help of a salvage ship at 12:15 pm on Monday. Then the rescuers began to bring out the dead bodies from the salvaged launch. Total 27 dead bodies were recovered including yesterday’s five. The information was confirmed by Bandar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shulka Sarkar. On Sunday evening the launch named Sabit Al Hasan carrying more than 50 passengers capsized in the Shitalakkhya river in Narayanganj after being hit by a goods laden cargo. Then five dead bodies were recovered in the night. With 22 more dead bodies recovered today the death toll reached at 27. The joint rescue operation is being conducted by BIWTA, Coast Guard, Fire Service and River police. Two separate investigation committees have been formed by Narayanganj district administration and BIWTA. Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Mostain Billah said on Sunday midnight that five dead bodies of women were recovered. Taka 25 thousand will be provided to the family members of each deceased. In this connection an investigation committee comprising seven members headed by Additional District Magistrate Tahera Khanam Bobby has been formed. The committee was asked to submit the report within five working days. On the other hand Public Relations Officer of shipping ministry Jahangir Alam Khan said, a four-member probe committee headed by BIWTA Director Md. Rafiqul Islam was formed to find out cause of the accident. AH   

At least 11 people, including five minors and three women, drowned after a trawler capsized on Gumai River of Netrakona's Kalmakanda upazila on Wednesday morning. Sohel Rana, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Kalmakanda, confirmed the incident. Details were not immediately available. 17 people were killed as a trawler capsized at Uchitpur under Madan upazila in Netrokona district. Four other were missing in this incident. The accident took place at around 11:45 am on Wednesday. They deceased were yet to be identified. According to the police source, 48 people from Charshirta union and Atpara Teligati under Mymensingh district came to Uchitpur to enjoy the nature. The place is known as Mini Cox’s Bazar. But due to billowy wave the trawler capsized at Gobindashree Rajalikanda area. 17 dead bodies were recovered and four other are still missing. Officer in Charge of Madan police station Md. Ramizul Haque said, 17 dead bodies were recovered and four other are missing. The rescue operation is going on. AH  

At least five people drowned as a boat capsized in Kauljani River in Tangail’s Basail Upazila on Friday afternoon.  Rubel Mia, a member of Kauljani Union Parishad, said the incident took place around 4 pm when the boatman came in touch of a live wire in mid-river in Gilabari area and got electrocuted. At one stage, the passengers on board got panicked and began moving in a haphazard way that resulted in the capsize.  “Five bodies have so far retrieved from the spot,” he said, adding that it is unclear how many passengers were on board.  Shafiqul Islam, a fire-man of Fire Service and Civil Defence’s Basail station, said on information, they sent divers to the spot.  The deceased were identified as Taij Uddin, 50, the boatman; Jamela Begum, 60, wife of Miju Mia; Hamidur Rahmna Rono, 35, her son; Shah Alom, 25, son of Haidar Ali, and another 32-year-old woman.  Source: UNB AH

River police have arrested Mosaddek Hanif Soyad, owner of Moyur-2 launch- the prime accused in connection with Morning Bird launch capsize and incident of deaths owing to the accident. He was arrested from Sobhanbag in the capital on Wednesday night. River police Dhaka zone Police Super Khondoker Faridul Islam said, according to the secret information a team of the river police arrested him from an apartment house at Sobhanbag in the capital on Wednesday midnight. Mentionable on June 29 at around 9 am a small launch named Morning Bird capsized in the river Buriganga after hit by the large launch Moyur-2. In the accident 34 passengers lost their lives, who were on board in the Morning Bird. Five dead bodies were recovered and three people were missing in two separate tourists laden boats capsize in Rangamati lake. Police said, a boat full of tourists capsized at DC Banglo area while it was heading towards Subolong from Rangamati hanging bridge area. Local people rushed for salvage work and recovered five dead bodies. It is known that the deceased were the workers of Chattogram Pacific Jeans Garments. On the other hand, three people including two children were missing when a boat carrying 53 devotees of Iskon capsized at Kolar Depo area in the Kaptai lake. The missing persons are-Tumpa Majumder (30), Deblila (10) and Binoy (5). Local administration is conducting the rescue operation. Additional Police Super of Rangamati Sufiullah told Rtv online, five dead bodies were recovered in connection with two separate boat capsize incidents. Three are still missing. AH  

Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen said, it is feared that 30 to 35 Bangladeshis were killed in the boat capsize incident in Tunisia coast on Mediterranean Sea while the migrants were going from Libya to Italy. He said these while discussing the matter with the newsmen at foreign ministry on Sunday. The Foreign Minister said, the government has no confirmed information about how many people were killed in the boat capsize incident carrying the migrants. But according to international media report, of the 60 deceased most of the people were Bangladeshi. He said, local fishermen rescued 14 Bangladeshis. There is no confirmed information about how many people are Bangladeshis from the missing. As 37 people are missing from the 51 Bangladeshis, so we can think that they died. Quoting the Red Crescent different international media reports said, a boat carrying the migrants capsized on Thursday night near Tunisia coast on Mediterranean Sea. In this incident 60 people were killed and most of them were Bangladeshi. News Agency AFP said, 16 people were rescued by the Tunisian fishermen. Of them 14 are Bangladeshis including one child. A K Abdul Momen said, after being informed the matter an officer of the embassy there went to the spot. Efforts are going on to rescue the missing. Besides there are attempts to bring back the people who were rescued. He said, according to the message sent by Bangladesh Ambassador in Libya on Saturday, there were 51 Bangladeshis on that boat. AH
