Barguna Rifat killing: Death reference at High Court
The death reference in Rifat Sharif killing case reached the High Court Division on Sunday. High Court Special Officer Mohammad Saifur Rahman said it has been sent to the bench concerned. On September 30, Rifat Sharif’s wife Aysha Siddika Minni and five others were sentenced to death over his killing in Barguna in broad daylight last year. District and Sessions Judge Md Asaduzzaman delivered the verdict. Death reference is sent to the High Court for approval of the death penalty of the convicts. Later, the court will hold a hearing on the death reference after preparing a paperbook on it. Currently, the death reference hearing of different cases filed in 2014-2015 is being held at the High Court. Rifat, 22, was hacked to death in broad daylight in the district town on June 26 last year. He was attacked near the main gate of Barguna Government College. Surveillance camera footage showed his wife Minni apparently trying to save him. Twenty-four people were accused in the murder case filed by Rifat’s father. Minni, initially named as a witness, was later arrested on July 16 last year and made an accused. Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayon Bond, the main accused, was killed in an alleged gunfight with police on July 2. A Barguna court on January 1 indicted Minni and nine others for Rifat’s murder. Meanwhile, 14 other underage accused are being tried separately at a juvenile court over Rifat’s murder. Source: UNB AH

Barguna Rifat killing: Wife Minni, five others sentenced to death
Rifat Sharif’s wife Aysha Siddika Minni and five others have been sentenced to death for killing him in Barguna in broad daylight last year. District and Sessions Judge Md Asaduzzaman delivered the verdict Wednesday. The other convicts are — Rakibul Hasan Rifat Farazi, Al Kaiyum alias Akon, Hasan, Mohaiminul Islam Sifat and Hridoy. Four others — Musa, Sagor, Rabbi and Saimun – were acquitted. Rifat’s father Dulal Sharif said he was satisfied with the “exemplary sentence”. Minni’s father on the other hand cried foul. “We didn’t get justice. We’ll move the High Court,” he said. Rifat, 22, was hacked to death in broad daylight in the district town on June 26 last year. Issue red alert for the accused of Barguna incident: HC to IGP
The High Court has asked to issue red alert at all the police stations so that the killers of Rifat cannot leave the country. The court has asked Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take action in this regard on Thursday. Deputy Attorney General Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar said before the court, one accused was arrested. Drives are going on to detain others. Each of the accused will be arrested and brought under judicial process. At that time to the representative of state the court said, ask IGP to take action so that the accused cannot cross the border or leave the country. Ask him to issue red alert on border. Earlier the High Court bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader expressed anger when reports of different newspapers in connection with the killing were placed before them. At that time the court said, in which way Rifat was hacked to death in an open place but nobody except his wife came to save him. People saw that standing even recorded the moment. It is a failure of our people. People were not like this. Where society has stood? Meanwhile, check posts were set up in different spots to detain the accused of Rifat murder case. In this regard SP of Barguna Maruf Hossain said that check posts were set up in different parts of Barguna. On Wednesday at arounf 10:30 am Nayan and his associates hacked Rifat on Barguna Governemnt College road. He was rushed to Barguna Sadar Hospital at first and later shifted to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital but at around 4 pm Rifat died while undergoing treatment there. AH

Two Pirates Killed in 'Gun Fight' with RAB in Barguna
Two pirates were killed in a ‘gun fight’ with RAB at Patharghata in Barguna. The incident took place on Monday morning at Majher (Bihonga) Char of Baleswar River adjacent to Patharghata. But the identity of the deceased could not be known. At the time the ammunition and firearms were recovered from the spot. Barisal RAB-8 Wing Commander Hasan Emon Al-Rajib confirmed the matter. He said the search is going on. Large quantities of ammunition were recovered. Details will be given at the end of the operation. FU
