Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said, there is no possibility to defer the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) election due to the threat of coronavirus spread. The government has not declared the situation as a disaster. So no situation has occurred to suspend the election.

He said these after holding view exchange meeting with the Returning Officer, Executive Magistrate and law enforcing agency members at the Chattogram circuit house on Saturday afternoon.

The CEC said, we have taken some further steps regarding the election in Chattogram. Usually we give decision to close government and private offices on the election day. As there are holidays from March 26 to 29, in this situation if we keep the offices closed then the voters will be in a kind of trap of holidays. Then they may go to their homes by not preferring the election. In this context offices will be opened for half day on the day of election.

KM Nurul Huda said, generally we are in strict position about the movement of automobiles. On the election day private vehicles and bus-minibus plying are kept stopped. It is seen that if transports are kept stopped then voters who reside far from the center cannot cast votes. In this situation we said, Police Commissioner and district administration officials will first sit with the Returning Officer and then they will sit with the transport leaders to decide whether limited automobile plying can be maintained or not.

He said, polling agents should be the reliable persons of the candidates. They should have power to protest or prevent if there is any irregularity. Polling agents have to come to the centers with their own responsibility.

The CEC said, we want cooperation of all to make the election free and neutral. There is no interest of the assigned responsible persons.
