UK lifts ban on Dhaka-London air cargo

The UK government has withdrawn the ban on Dhaka-London direct air cargo. The route was made open after two years.

British High Commissioner in Dhaka Alison Blake declared this at a press conference at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister AKM Shahjahan Kamal and Civil Aviation Authority member Mostafizur Rahman were present on the occasion.

In March, 2016 United Kingdom imposed ban on direct air cargo citing some security reasons. At that time inadequate security management at cargo village of Shahjalal airport and free access of outsiders were shown reasons for the ban.

The ban affected the profit of Biman. Because one of the main income sources of Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ is air cargo.

According to Bangladesh Biman source, Biman earned profit in 2016-17 fiscal year but in the last fiscal year its net profit decreased. Biman’s financial statement of the fiscal year 2016-17 was approved in its tenth annual general meeting on December 19.

There it was mentioned that the UK air cargo ban made an effect on Biman’s profit. In the fiscal year 2016-17 Biman’s air cargo shipment was 33 thousand 542 tons which was 40 thousand 931 tons in the fiscal year 2015-16.

Though UK has lifted ban but Bangladesh has to follow some conditions for continuing direct air cargo.

Of the conditions there are, Bangladesh should appoint two long term consultants over security of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, to follow the EU model for aviation security and United Kingdom and Bangladesh will evaluate the airport security jointly.

Fire at Hazaribagh slum under control

A massive fire broke out in Dhaka's Hazaribagh area. The fire was brought under control around one hour after the fire broke out. The fire broke out at around 11:50am today (April 12). On information, the fire service rushed to the spot and doused the blaze. Rozina Akhtar, duty officer of the fire service, confirmed the matter. Initially, the cause of the fire could not be ascertained. Seven units were sent to the spot after receiving the news. The fire was brought under control by 12:40 pm. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, she added.

Sadarghat launch capsize, accused on 3 day remand

A Dhaka court has placed five people on a three-day remand each in a case filed over the death of five passengers in a launch capsize at Sadarghat. Naqib, a sub-inspector of Sadarghat thana River Police, pleaded to place the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand each for "fair investigation" on Friday (April 12). The accused are Md Abdur Rauf Hawlader, and Md Selim Hawlader, Md Faruk Khan, Md Mizanur Rahman, and Md Moniruzzaman. On behalf of the accused, lawyers appealed for bail seeking cancellation of the remand. But the bail application was opposed by the state. Dhaka's Chief Judicial Magistrate, Arifa Chowdhury Himel, placed each of the accused on a three-day remand. Additional Public Prosecutor Anwarul Kabir Babul confirmed the information. Meanwhile, joint director of River Securty and Traffic Management, Ismail Hossain, filed the case at South Keraniganj Police Station.

PM highly praised the traffic management of Tejgaon Division

About five thousand guests came to Ganobhaban on this occasion. At least 200 homes burnt in Chattogram’s Firingee Bazar slum

The fire that broke out at the Tekpara and Yakub Nagar slums in Firingi Bazar of Chattogram has been brought under control. The fire has burnt down nearly 200 homes. The fire service received information about the fire at around 1:20 pm on Monday (April 15). Nine units of fire service brought the fire under control after an hour's effort. Dinomoni Sharma, deputy director of Chattogram Divisional Fire Service, confirmed the incident. Local Councillor Murad said that food will be arranged for the affected families who were. Nearly 200 homes have been burnt in that incident.

Sudden rain in the capital

12 more Myanmar BGP members flee to Bangladesh

Twelve more members of Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) and and military personnel have taken shelter in Bangladesh after fleeing through Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban. They took shelter in Bangladesh through Ashartali, and Jamchhari borders under Sadar union, and Rezu border under Ghumdhum union on Tuesday morning (April 16). It is learned that they have taken shelter in Bangladesh amid clashes with separatists in the border region. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has disarmed them and kept them under their supervision. BGB Public Relations Officer, Shariful Islam confirmed the matter. He said BGP members and and military personnel have been kept under the supervision of BGB. Earlier on March 12, 177 BGP members fled to Bangladesh. They were taken into custody by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
