Khaleda Zia shifted to women’s prison

Imprisonment awarded Begum Khaleda Zia was shifted to women’s ward on the first floor from the Jail Super’s room of the old Dhaka Central Jail at Nazimuddin Road.

Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Iftekhar Uddin confirmed the matter on Sunday and said to the newsmen that she was shifted on Saturday night.

Considering the probable sentence of Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case Department of Prisons took preparations to keep her at the day care center on the first floor of three-storey women’s ward in the old central jail. But after the verdict on Thursday Khaleda Zia was taken to the Senior Jail Super’s abandoned room in the jail.

A Dhaka court on Thursday awarded Khaleda Zia 5 years imprisonment and other accused including Tarique Rahman to 10 years imprisonment each in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. Special Judge Court set up at the parade ground of Prisons Department at Bakshibazar in the capital delivered the verdict. Besides, the other accused except Khaleda Zia were also fined 2 crore 10 lakh 71 thousand 671 taka each.

After the verdict Khaleda Zia was kept in the old central jail at Nazimuddin road. On Saturday five lawyers of Khaleda Zia met her in the jail and then on Sunday they applied for her division. After the hearing Judge of special court-5 Md. Akhtaruzzaman passed the order for division. Direction was also given for taking measures according to the jail code.
