BNP standing committee member and former Law Minister Barrister Moudud Ahmed has said, an appeal will be filed on Sunday against the verdict that jailed Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust case, if the lawyers can manage a certified copy of the judgment on Thursday.

He said this at a press conference after the verdict at the party’s central office at Nayapaltan in the capital on Thursday.

Moudud said, such type of punishment cannot be given under section 409. Others crimes were mentioned but there was nothing stated about Khaleda Zia’s crime. Though it was a criminal case but it was directed as a political case. So the verdict was not delivered according to the law.

The former Law Minister said, court will decide whether Begum Khaleda Zia can participate in the election or not. But after getting bail she will be able to participate in the election.

Earlier on Thursday BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was awarded five years imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case filed by Anti Corruption Commission. In the case the other five persons including party Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman were awarded 10 years imprisonment by the court.

Khaleda Zia and the others were awarded the punishment under section 109 and 409. The court also mentioned that considering the age and social status the punishment of Khaleda Zia was reduced.
