3 get death sentence for killing RU teacher Shafiul

The speedy trial tribunal has awarded death sentence for three people in connection with killing Rajshahi University (RU) Social Science department professor Dr. AKM Sahfiul Islam Lilon.

The death sentence awarded persons are-Abdus Samad Pintu, Ariful Islam Manik and Sabuj Sheikh. In the verdict eight people were acquitted.

Rajshahi speedy trial tribunal judge Anup Kumar delivered the verdict on Monday.

Public Prosecutor of the tribunal Advocate Entajul Haque Babu said, in the case total 33 witnesses were produced before the court. The deposition concluded on March 13. During argument placing he sought capital punishment for the accused.

On the other hand Advocate Ekramul Haque, Mizanul Islam, Abu Bakkar, Raisul Islam and Abdul Malek Rana placed their arguments for the accused.

Dr. Shafiul, a fan of Lalon was also popular for his open mind and progressive ideology in the campus. He was hacked to death on November 15, 2014 at Choddopy area adjacent to the campus. On the following day RU Registrar Professor Entajul Haque filed a murder case with Matihar police station accusing some unidentified miscreants.

The tribunal fixed the date for verdict on April 15 after conclusion of placing arguments in the sensational case on April 4.

The then Detective Branch Inspector Rezaus Sadik filed the charge sheet before the court accusing 11 in connection with the killing. The judge delivered the verdict in presence of the accused.
