3 killed in BGB-locals clash in Thakurgaon

Three villagers were killed in a clash between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members and local inhabitants at Haripur upazila in Thakurgaon district. 15 people were also injured in the incident.

The incident took place at Baharampur village under Gafua union of the upazila at around 12:30 pm on Tuesday. The injured were being treated at Dinajpur Abdur Rahim Medical College and Hospital.

The deceased are Nabab (35), son of Nazrul of Ruhiya area of Haripur upazila, Joynul (12), son of Nur Islam of Baharampur area and Sadequl (32), son of Abdur Rahim.

Locals said, Mahabub Ali of Baharampur village bought a cow six months ago. He started from his house to sell the cow at nearby Jadurani Bazar on Tuesday morning. At that time Betna camp BGB members thought the cow as an Indian one and tried to snatch it from Mahabub. Then the clash originated between BGB members and local inhabitants including family members of Mahabub. At one stage BGB opened fire and it killed three people including two pedestrians. At least 15 people including BGB members were also injured in the incident.

Commander of Thakurgaon 50 BGB Lt. Colonel Tuhin Md. Masud said, when a patrol team of BGB was returning with four seized cow a group of smugglers attacked on it. As four BGB members were injured then the team opened some rounds of blank fire. As the situation was not under control after that then BGB members opened fire.

Officer in Charge of Haripur police station Md. Amiruzzaman said, police rushed to the spot after hearing the news. Dead bodies were seen lying there. The BGB members left the place when police arrived.

After visiting the spot Deputy Commissioner KM Kamruzzaman told the newsmen, BGB conducted the drive over suspicion of smuggled cattle. At that time they seized some cows. Then the clash originated and incident of killing happened. The district administration formed an investigation committee. Action will be taken after getting the report.
