Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu told the Parliament that cancellation of the license of two private television channels is now under consideration. He said this while responding to a supplementary question raised by opposition bench lawmaker Fakhrul Imam at the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday.

The Minister said, the government is yet to take a final decision on cancellation of two private television channels -Diganta and Islamic Television.

The broadcasting of two private television channel is temporarily shut down, he said. The government issued show cause notice to the authority of the two channels but the reply of the show cause notice was not satisfactory at all, he added.

On May 6,2013, the government halted the broadcast of private channels Diganta TV and Islamic TV over allegations of airing provocative programs to whip up public sentiment.

Hasanul Haq Inu also told Parliament that 2 thousand 18 online newspapers from across the country have so far applied seeking registration.

The minister came up with the statistics while replying to question from Nurunnabi Chowdhury, a ruling party lawmaker of Bhola-3 constituency.

Noting that the government has no list of the country's online newspapers, Inu said the registration process of online newspapers is underway.

He said the number of the country's registered newspapers is 3 thousand 25, while that of government-approved private television channels is 45.
