Twenty people have been rescued after a ferry capsized on the Padma River with nine vehicles near Paturia.

Another person is still unaccounted for, rescuers say. The identities of those rescued could not be known yet.

Due to poor visibility, traffic on the Paturia-Daulatdia, Aricha-Kazirhat and Dhawapara-Najirganj routes was suspended from 2am on Wednesday (Jan 17).

Syed Mushfiqur Rahman, superintendent of Naval Police, Faridpur Region, on Wednesday said that the anchored ferry “Rajanigandha” had a crack on its bottom because of which it sunk.

Besides, the ferry was very old and overloaded. He however could not confirm the bulkhead hitting the ferry.

One of the truck drivers who was on the ill-fated ferry blamed the BIWTC for the accident, claiming that no bulkhead had hit the vessel.

River police and fire service officials are continuing rescue operations, he said, adding that one person is still missing.

Meanwhile, the BIWTC has formed a five-member committee to investigate the incident and file a report within five working days.

Last year, at least 91 people were killed and 152 injured, while more than 100 remained missing in 148 accidents on waterways.
