The killing of August 15 was designed to make independence ineffective. It followed attempts to brainwash people with distorted histories. It was very difficult for us to come to power,” Prime Minister said at a rally marking Bangabandhu’s homecoming and the Awami League's victory in the 12th parliamentary elections at Suhrawardy Udyan on Wednesday (Jan 10).

“Interestingly, when the dictators stole votes, there was no discussion about it. And when we returned the people's right to vote, questions about election and democracy were raised,” she said.

The Awami League secured a fourth consecutive term in office, winning an absolute majority in the January 7 election boycotted by the BNP in an attempt to make it questionable.

Hasina noted that the reputation of Bangladesh is being undermined because of some people of the country. “The whole world praises Bangladesh but some people in the country think that it is better for an undemocratic government to come to power,” she said.

The prime minister thanked the people for not supporting the BNP’s efforts to thwart the vote.

She said that despite distributing leaflets to boycott the vote, the government did not stop them. Strikes were enforced to prevent the vote, but the people did not respond to their calls. They went to the polling station and gave their opinion.

“I’m grateful to the people for this,” she said.
