Covid-19: Bangladesh records lowest daily deaths since Aug 2

Bangladesh on Monday reported the death of 26 Covid-19 patients in a day – the lowest since August 2 when the country saw 22 people die.

Until morning, the death tally stood at 4,759 and the fatality rate at 1.4 percent, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

In a handout, DGHS announced detection of 1,812 new coronavirus patients in 24 hours.

Ninety-four RT-PCR labs across the country tested 14,216 samples during this period. “The daily infection rate is 12.75 percent,” DGHS said.

So far 1,742,696 tests have been conducted and 339,332 (19.47 percent) of the samples were found to be positive.

The number of recovered patients increased to 243,155 as 2,512 made recovery in a day. The recovery rate stands at 71.66 percent.

In per one million population, 1,992.48 cases are being recorded and 1427.75 are recovering while 27.94 are dying.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18.

Of the victims, 3,708 are men and 1,051 women.

Among the latest deceased, 21 are aged above 50 years, three between 41 and 50 and two between 31 and 40.

So far, 2,312 coronavirus patients have died in Dhaka division, 1,005 in Chattogram, 321 in Rajshahi, 401 in Khulna, 180 in Barishal, 212 in Sylhet, 226 in Rangpur and 102 in Mymensingh.

Across the country, 17,847 people are in isolation and 49,347 are quarantined.

Global Situation

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Sunday reported a record single-day rise in the number of new coronavirus infections, with 307,930 reported over 24 hours.

WHO said the global total deaths have climbed to 917,417 with more than 5,500 deaths in 24 hours.

According to the report, the biggest increases in infections were reported in India, the US and Brazil.

It says there have been more than 28 million confirmed cases worldwide and half of which have been in the Americas.

The previous one-day record for new cases was on September 6 when the WHO reported 306,857 new infections.

According to the WHO, India reported 94,372 new cases on Sunday, followed by the US with 45,523 and Brazil with 43,718.

More than 1,000 new deaths were recorded in the US and India while Brazil said 874 people had died from Covid-19 related illness in the past 24 hours.

India has the second-largest number of confirmed cases in the world, behind the US.

Coronavirus cases were first reported in China in December last year. The WHO declared it a pandemic in March.

There is no approved vaccine for the virus yet although a number of promising candidates are in the final stage of trial.
