The garment workers have staged protests again for the third consecutive day on Tuesday to press home their various demands, including implementation of minimum wage.

When the garment workers tried to block the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Uttara’s Abdullahpur area around 12 o'clock, police lobbed tear shells to disperse them. Later, they gathered again on the busy road.

Assistant Police Commissioner of Airport Zone Mizanur Rahman said the workers of different garment factories in Uttarkhan and Dakshinkhan areas gathered and tried to come to Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at 9am.

“The workers are trying to get workers out of various garment factories. If not, the factory is vandalized. Police are trying to keep the situation under control” he added.

On the other hand, when the workers took to the street in Kalshi area of Mirpur in the city, chase and counter-chase incident took place between police and workers.

On receiving the news, different garment workers of Pallabi and Begum Rokeya Sarani of Mirpur took to the streets.

Assistant Commissioner of Kafrul Zone Syed Mamun Mostafa said the vehicular movement is open on the one side of the road while another side of the road in Kalshi area is blocked due to their protest in front of the 22-storey garment factory.

“In Rokeya Sarani and Pallabi areas, workers of different garment workers came to the streets demanding realization of various demands, interrupting traffic movement. But we are trying to control the situation,” he said.

The workers of the garment workers are staging protests on the important airport road in Dhaka from Sunday, demanding the increase and implementation of the minimum wage announced by the government.

They complained that the owners are not paying their salaries according to the government's new salary structure set for them. Rather, the owners are exploiting them in many ways.
