The crash happened at a motor sports event organized by the Sri Lankan army that was being held for the first time in five years after COVID-19 and an economic crisis. At least seven people were killed when a race car veered off a track and ploughed into a crowd of spectators in Sri Lanka on Sunday. The incident occurred at the Fox Hill circuit in Diyatalawa, some 180 kilometers (110 miles) east of the capital, Colombo. "A total of 27 people were taken to hospital and seven of them succumbed to their injuries," police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa said. Among the dead were four race officials and an eight-year-old girl. Investigation underway Thalduwa said police have opened an investigation into the accident, which occurred at the motor sports event organized by the Sri Lankan army. The remaining races were called off after the accident. Around 45,000 spectators had gathered at the event, which was being held for the first time in five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Sri Lanka's economic crisis. Shortly before the crash, army chief Vikum Liyanage announced that the gates had been opened to spectators free of charge in order to promote motor sports.  

Initial reports suggest there were no survivors after the Ilyushin Il-76 military cargo plane crashed in Russia's Ivanovo region. Russia said one of its Il-76 military cargo planes crashed shortly after takeoff from an airfield northeast of Moscow on Tuesday. "An Il-76 military transport aviation plane crashed in the Ivanovo region while taking off to perform a scheduled flight. On board were eight crew members and seven passengers," the defense ministry said. It added an engine fire during takeoff was the likely cause of the crash in the the Ivanovo region, around 200 kilometres (125 miles) east of Moscow. According to online reports, there were no survivors. Multiple unverified videos and photographs of a falling aircraft circulated on Russian social networks. Air traffic increased due to war in Ukraine  The Defense Ministry reported dozens of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia when the crash occurred. Ukrainian drones hit some targets deep inside Russia, including Moscow.  Russia has significantly increased the transport of troops and military equipment by air and land across its territory during its two-year war in Ukraine. In January, Russia said Ukraine had downed an Il-76 in the Belgorod region near the countries' shared border.  The four-engine Il-76 is a heavy-lift transport plane that has been in service with the Soviet and then Russian air forces since the 1970s.  

Four people were killed as a pickup and a CNG run auto-rickshaw collided in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail on Sunday (Feb 18). The accident occurred at around 4:30 pm on the Gorhai-Sakhipur road in the Telipara area of Mirzapur upazila. Three of the deceased were male and one was female passengers. Officer in-charge of Bansoil police outpost, Humayun Kabir, confirmed the matter. He said that the pickup van coming from Sokhipur crashed the CNG leaving them dead on the spot. All of the deceased persons were the passengers of the CNG.  

Seven people killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG in Mymensingh. The accident took place at Alalpur area of ​​Sadar Upazila around 11:00 am on Friday (February 16). Accorduing to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwar Hossain seven people were killed in the bus-CNG collision. Police have been dispatched to the scene. Anwar said that the accident happened around 11:00 am when the bus crashed into the autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction on the Mymensingh-Sherpur regional road in the Alalpur area, the seven passengers of the autorickshaw killed on the spot.  

A Russian military transport plane has crashed with dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war on board, according to the Defense Ministry. A Russian Ilyushin Il-76 military transport plane crashed on Wednesday in Russia's Belgorod region, the state-run RIA news agency quoted the Defense Ministry as saying.   "On board were 65 captured Ukrainian army servicemen being transported to the Belgorod region for exchange, six crew members and three escorts," RIA quoted the Defense Ministry as saying.   The transport plane was carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, according to the AFP news agency.  The governor of Russia's Belgorod region said everyone onboard the military transport plane had died in the crash. The Kremlin said it would "look into" the incident.  The Il-76 military transport aircraft is designed to carry troops, cargo and military equipment. It typically has a five-person crew and can carry up to 90 passengers.

According to the US Air Force, the pilot was on a routine training mission. It is the latest crash involving US military aircraft in the region in the past few months. A United States F-16 fighter plane crashed into waters off the coast of South Korea on Monday, the US Air Force said. The pilot was rescued after ejecting when the aircraft experienced an "in-flight emergency." "We are grateful for the safe recovery of our airman by our  Republic of Korea Maritime Forces Allies and that the pilot is in good condition," Colonel Matthew Gaetke, the 8th Fight Wing commander, said. The crash happened during a routine training mission over the Yellow Sea. The cause of the incident is being investigated. Recent US training accidents  In May, a US F-16 fighter plane crashed during a routine training exercise in a farming area south of Seoul. The pilot safely ejected from the plane, and there were no other casualties. In neighboring Japan, the US military grounded its V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft fleet after a fatal crash that killed eight US airmen last month.

It has been deployed in transportation and medical evacuation operations over Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Kuwait. Yakushima lies south of Japan's southernmost main island Kyushu. Osprey's troubled history  Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki told reporters that he would ask the US military to suspend all Osprey flights in Japan. Nearly half of the 50,000 American troops in Japan are based in Okinawa.  The aircraft has something of a troubled history, with several fatal crashes over the years. Another Osprey crashed in northern Australia in August during a military exercise for locally based troops. Three US marines among 23 on board died in that incident on Melville Island, north of Darwin. Four US Marines were killed in Norway last year when their MV-22B Osprey aircraft crashed during NATO training exercises. Three Marines died in 2017 when an Osprey clipped the back of a transport ship and crashed while trying to land at sea off Australia's north coast. Another 19 Marines died in 2000 when their Osprey crashed during exercises in Arizona.

A passenger plane carrying 14 people crashed in Brazil's Amazon rainforest on Saturday, killing all on board, according to a local official. It was attempting to land in Barcelos during heavy rain when it crashed. According to reports those on board were Brazilian tourists on a fishing trip. Local television network Globo News broadcast visuals of the aircraft lying on a muddy road with the front part covered by foliage. Brazil's air force dispatched a team from Manaus to gather data and secure any evidence that could be used to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

At least 16 people were killed and 36 injured in a bus crash in the central Mexican state of Puebla. Local authorities of the country said this on Tuesday. The Interior Department in Puebla said on social media that, the crash occurred early Tuesday at kCuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway. He also said that, "remains in constant communication with the Federal Roads and Bridges, as well as ministerial and state authorities in order to support the victims of this regrettable event." The injured were taken to the Tehuacan General Hospital and other medical centers, he added.

A small plane crashed into a hangar in Poland on Monday, killing five people and injuring at least eight others.
