Europe for Tibet campaign launched In Brussels
A campaign “Europe for Tibet” was officially launched in the European Parliament on April 9 in Brussels, Belgium with a meeting with Members of the European Parliament in anticipation of the forthcoming European elections slated for June 6-9. The initiative, known as EU4Tibet, is a collaborative effort among various Tibet Support Groups across Europe. Facilitated by entities such as the Tibet Interest Group in the European Parliament, alongside the Offices of Tibet in Brussels, Geneva, and London, as well as the International Campaign for Tibet in Europe and the International Tibet Network, the campaign aims to garner support for Tibetan rights and freedom on the international political and grassroots circuits. Additionally, it seeks to provide a platform through the website eu4tibet.org, where groups advocating for Tibetan causes within member states can secure pledges of support from candidates participating in the 2024 European elections and question their respective political parties on their stance concerning Tibet. The 2024 European elections will see the election of 720 EU citizens to the European Parliament for five years. In light of this, the campaign implores these future parliamentarians to commit to championing Tibet’s cause throughout their tenure. The campaign calls on the future members of the European parliament to pledge to take a stand for Tibet during their mandate. The European Parliament has been an active supporter of the Tibetan cause and the Dalai Lama’s non-violent approach. It has advocated for dialogue to resolve differences between the Dalai Lama and the Chinese government, pushing for autonomy in Tibet to safeguard religious and cultural freedoms. Since 1988, the Parliament has provided a platform for discussions on Tibet, hosting the Dalai Lama despite objections from China. Over the years, the European parliament has raised awareness about Tibet’s human rights situation through hearings, exhibitions, and conferences. It has passed around 50 resolutions focusing on Tibet, human rights, and China, addressing issues like religious freedom restrictions and linguistic rights violations.     Source: Phayul

A Pro-China Campaign Against the Prague Inter-Governmental Religious Freedom Conference—and Bitter Winter
Anti-cultist Steven Hassan and fellow travelers of the Chinese Communist Party, joined forces against the International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance summit—and our magazine. From November 28 to 30, Prague hosted the International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance (IRFBA) conference, which followed similar inter-ministerial meetings in Washington DC and London. It was hailed throughout the democratic world as one of the largest and most successful gathering of governments to promote freedom of religion or belief and denounce its violations.    As reported on the website of the U.S. Department of State, IRFBA gathers 37 countries, with others in process of joining and five participating as “friends.” The United Nations attends IRFBA meetings as an “observer” through the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB). Not surprisingly, China was mentioned in the Prague meeting as the first country in the sad list of those violating religious liberty  Contrasting with the international acclaim for such a massive effort to promote religious liberty, a tiny group of pro-China activists met in Brussels on November 22 to denounce the IRFBA conference even before it started. They organized a hybrid seminar called “Misuse Freedom of Religion—SECTS—Twisted Belief—Destructive Cults—Pseudo FORB” (capitals in the original).   The seminar was presented on Facebook as featuring presentations “by Steven Hassan, Sven Aerts & Roland Delcour [sic].” Readers of “Bitter Winter” probably have heard of two of these three characters. Steven Hassan, a former American deprogrammer, is one of the most fanatical international anti-cultists. Roland Delcourt is a Belgian journalist who also spells his own last name Delcour, Delacore, and Delacourt, perhaps because he machine-translates articles written by his Chinese handlers without even re-reading them. Delcourt is married to a Chinese and has lived in Shenzhen for “at least 20 years.” He gives interviews and writes propaganda letters in favor of the CCP that are published in the Chinese regime’s official organs, including the People’s Daily and the news agency Xinhua.    Delcourt is also a “cyberwarrior” and posts on social media to defend the CCP, with a language that parrots, but goes beyond, the “wolf warrior” Chinese diplomats. For instance, he likes to play on the phonetic similarity between “Biden” and the French word “bidon” (phony), and calls the U.S. President, when he criticizes China, “a false democrat,” “the Yankee Gauleiter” (suggesting a comparison with Nazi war criminals), and “the cholera (as Trump was the plague).” Delcourt was also involved in an unfortunate story about producing a false document against Chinese asylum seekers in Europe.   Delcourt protesting on Facebook Biden’s visit to Belgium and a Belgian Parliament’s vote condemning China’s genocide of the Uyghurs: “We know that the visit of the Yankee Gauleiter, a false democrat, is to unite the vassals of the United States in a fight against China.” The third promoter of the hybrid seminar, Sven Aerts, appears to be active in various capacities in Brussels, inter alia as representative of the European Spas Association, no doubt a worthy and useful organization. The problem is that Aerts is also chairman of something called FAE-FAE, the Federation of Asian Communities in Europe. If one looks at its Facebook page, it would seem that one of the activities of FAE-FAE is promoting overweight escorts, but we all know that social media pages can be hacked. However, we have been watching the FAE-FAE Facebook profile for a while and would respectfully recommend to Aerts some housekeeping. It gives a strange impression to see the fat escorts’ promotion messages alternating with defenses of China and other Asian governments and attacks against “cults” and FoRB-promoting organization, including “Bitter Winter.”   Be it as it may be, we learn from the press release of the November 22 event that it was opened by Aerts, who attacked the Prague intergovernmental IRFBA meeting on these terms: “These pseudo FORB Summits are known to experts. They are clever propaganda manipulations, utilizing paper tigers, funnels, logical fallacies, making you look in one direction to get something at an entirely other side and hiding in plain sight. A very easy way to see if one has to deal with them is to observe their reaction when one intends to send some independent journalists who are not on the pre-approved list or real experts such as Dr. Steven HASSAN.” We understand that Hassan’s name deserves to be written in full capital, and he also spoke at the Brussels anti-IRFBA event via the Internet. Perhaps it was an opportunity to promote Aerts too from an expert on spas to an expert on religious liberty and “cults.”   It is unclear whether the following statement in the press release summarizes Hassan’s remarks or is a conclusion by the organizers, but it shows a curious idea of religious liberty: “The United States in opposition to many European member countries has a total absence of agency regulating beliefs and undoubtedly set a bad example for the world as it has for long allowed the development and growth of cults and various emerging new religious groups.” An “agency regulating beliefs” of course only exists in totalitarian countries or in Orwell’s novels, although the French MIVILUDES tries its best to approach the Orwellian model.   Hassan was certainly not ashamed of joining forces with the pro-China crowd, as he posted on Facebook about the event: “I am looking forward to having the opportunity of sharing my life work with those in Europe looking to better understand how destructive cults are using ‘religious freedom’ to deny people religious freedom.” His fellows travelers, however, were not there to “understand destructive cults” but to protect Chinese interests and badmouth in advance a high-level international meeting expected to condemn China. Steven Hassan’s Facebook post on the Brussels event. He even received one like. Delcourt also spoke, and a certain “Mr. Lacroix, a Belgian independent writer,” confirmed that “we do not advocate to vigorously promoting the so-called freedom of religious belief”—not that anybody had ever accused them of such advocacy—and rather called for more “political control” of religion.  The event left to us at “Bitter Winter” a certain expression of déja vu. Aerts, Delcourt, and Lacroix also spoke at the Brussels event launching the bizarre pro-Chinese “documentary movie” against “Bitter Winter.” From recent propaganda of the movie on Chinese media, we learn that at the event “Aerts introduced Steven Hassan,” but it is unclear whether he attended via video or his theories were just summarized.  We exposed a few days ago the ridiculous lies of the so-called documentary. I would just add here three lighter notes. The first is that one of the speakers at the launching of the anti-Bitter-Winter movie was Anne-Catherine Girard, from Reconquête-Benelux, a branch of the French extreme right and Islamophobic party Reconquête. She was an interesting speaker at an event accusing (falsely) “Bitter Winter” of promoting right-wing policies. A proposal by Reconquête-Benelux: “Abolish welfare benefits (family allowances, housing subsidies, RSA, etc.) and free healthcare (AME, etc.) for foreigners.” From X. These are the people accusing “Bitter Winter” of supporting “right-wing policies”—really? Second, whoever wrote the press release of the anti-Bitter-Winter event included the statement that “The Church of Almighty God is a ‘Cult’ that for most first appeared in the media due to its tentacular influence in the Japanese government and its direct link with the assassination of the late Japanese Prime Minister Shizo [sic] Abe.” It seems that the “world leading experts on cults” who organized the event confused The Church of Almighty God, a Chinese movement that has nothing to do with Japanese politics, with the Unification Church/Family Federation. The latter’s “link” with the killing of Shinzo Abe was that the killer hated the Unification Church and wanted to punish Abe for being sympathetic to it. Third, somebody brought to my attention that an occasionally funny but not particularly bright anti-cultist who sits in the board of the notorious anti-cult organization FECRIS some time ago wrote that “doubts about the reliability of ‘Bitter Winter’ have also been expressed by sources completely unconnected with the Chinese government, which may have an advantage in discrediting the magazine. For example… the FAE-FAE Federation of Asian Communities in Europe, which produced a video on the subject.” The FAE-FAE “completely unconnected with the Chinese government”? Funny, in fact—but not bright.

Sheikh Hasina kicks off election campaign at Sylhet
Hundreds of thousands of people thronged the venue to lend their support for Awami League as the party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina kicked off the election campaign today amid a wave of festivity across Sylhet. Amidst cheers and applause from the sea of people, the Awami League president took the stage with her sister Sheikh Rehana and waved the national flag of Bangladesh while party activists shouted Joy Bangla at Sylhet Government Alia Madrasa this afternoon. Earlier in the day, PM Sheikh Hasina talked to the reporters following her visit to Hazrat Shahjalal's shrine in Sylhet where she asserted the constitutional right of citizens to vote, and declared that no one should obstruct or harm others for exercising their voting rights. Her visit to Sylhet marks the beginning of her election campaign as the country gears up for the 12th parliamentary election scheduled for January 7, 2024. While talking to reporters this morning, the prime minister recounted the Awami League's election victories in 2009, 2014, and 2018, attributing them to the party's commitment to meeting the people's basic needs. She also criticised BNP-Jamaat for inciting a wave of terrorist and militant activities against citizens of the country aiming to disrupt the upcoming national election.   The PM emphasised that Bangladesh rejects all forms of militant and terrorist acts. She expressed confidence that the people of Bangladesh would eventually reject those responsible for such actions. She issued stern warning to the perpetrators of the recent arson attack and promised decisive action.

El Salvador: Bukele granted leave to campaign for reelection
El Salvador's Congress has allowed President Nayib Bukele to take a leave of absence in order to launch a reelection campaign. El Salvador's Congress late on Thursday granted President Nayib Bukele permission to leave his post for six months to launch a campaign for the upcoming general elections in 2024. "The President of the Republic, Nayib Armando Bukele Ortez, is granted a license for a period of 6 months, from December 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024, which shall be exercised without salary and with all the prerogatives that the position holds", said the decree, which was approved by 67 of the 84 deputies.  What does this mean? The document said the leave of absence does not "rupture of the link" between the Bukele and the presidency, but rather suspends "the exercise of the competencies or the public function" required by the post.  Claudia Rodriguez, the current head of the National Directorate of Municipal Works will replace Bukele in his duties. The decree further granted leave to Vice President Félix Ulloa, who will seek reelection together with Bukele for the ruling party Nuevas Ideas (NI). Legislators also voted for Bukele to maintain his immunity so that he could not be criminally prosecuted without it passing through Congress. Is Bukele's re-election bid unconstitutional? A controversial ruling in 2021 by El Salvador's Supreme Court established a new procedure that allowed Bukele to run in the February 2024 elections.  Before this ruling, a president had to wait 10 years after the end of his term to run again for the presidency.  Thursday's move by Congress was the last step required for Bukele to launch a campaign. Several constitutional lawyers have questioned the 2021 ruling, saying it is not a legal mandate because the election of the magistrates did not take place according to the legal process. Despite this, earlier this month, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal ruled that Bukele's candidacy met the legal requirements. The last time an El Salvador president seeked immediate reelection was under the dictatorship of Maximiliano Hernandez Martinez in 1935. Congressman Johnny Wright, of the opposition party Nuestro Tiempo (NT), said that the situation is a "real tragedy for our country, for the region and for the world". Bukele, who was formerly a mayor of San Salvador, is known globally for his sweeping crackdown on El Salvadoran gangs, which has drawn allegations of human rights violations.

Geneva: Sindhi Foundation holds poster campaign to highlight plight of Sindhis in Pakistan
The Sindhi Foundation organized a day-long poster campaign in front of the United Nations office in Geneva to make people aware of the plight of Sindhis in Pakistan’s Sindh province. The campaign was held during the 54th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.  Besides slogans criticizing Pakistan and China for exploiting the resources of Sindh, the posters depicted the pictures of several Sindhi political activists, journalists and other intellectuals who were forcibly abducted, tortured and brutally killed by Pakistan’s secret agencies. Speaking to ANI, Executive Director of Sindhi Foundation, Manawar Laghari said, “The message is very very clear.  Pakistan is a hurdle and is really a curse on the earth. No one is happy. Neither the people living in Sindh, Balochistan or Pakhtunkhwa, Saraikis, Hazaras, Chitrals, Gilgit – all those oppressed people they want to get rid of this country”. He added, “They want freedom from Pakistan and my message to the United Nations is this – we want referendum under the supervision of the United Nations not what the data Pakistan has, especially with the ISI, we don’t believe in that. Under the supervision of the UN referendum to get our independence. This is our very clear message”. Laghari said that in these pictures – some of them have disappeared, some were brutally killed and tortured. Some of them are still in the torture cells of the ISI and there are some girls who are also forcefully converted. He added, “One of my friends Professor Notan Lal who is in prison under the blasphemy laws and he is facing wrong allegations against him. This is Pakistan’s strategy to suppress the Sindhis”. In a letter sent by the Sindhi Foundation to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, it explained the case of Sindh and highlighted several ongoing issues. It stated that Sindhi schools were closed in cities in Sindh and Urdu schools was opened. It also highlighted many issues like enforced disappearances of Sindhi political activists, forced conversion of Sindhi Hindu girls and agricultural land usurped by Pakistani army generals.

British Trade Secretary to launch UK-India campaign during her G20 visit
British Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch will launch the 'Alive with Opportunity' campaign, which is designed to build on the UK and India’s strong bilateral relationship and boost trade and investment, during her ongoing visit to Jaipur.  According to a statement released by the UK government, the Trade Secretary, who is in India to attend G20 trade ministers, will launch the campaign during her three-day visit to India. This campaign aims to stimulate interest and demand for British goods and services and attract new Indian inward investment. After attending the G20 Trade Ministers Meeting in Jaipur, she will fly to New Delhi for a parallel business-focused Business 20 summit, in addition to meetings with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and the Tata Group Chairman, Natarajan Chandrasekaran. Before departing for India, Badenoch said, “I’m delighted to be returning to India to support their G20 Presidency, further our trade talks and meet key business leaders. The UK and India have a thriving relationship and we both share an ambition to deepen our cultural and trading ties." “India is the UK’s second biggest source of investment projects and I’m confident this new campaign will help boost interest in and demand for UK goods and services even further," she added.  Further, as per the statement, the UK government will launch 'Alive with Opportunity', a 1.5 million pound marketing campaign designed to build on the UK and India’s strong and enduring relationship, boost trade and investment, and promote the powerful cultural links between the two countries. "New Department for Business and Trade (DBT) data shows India is the UK’s 2nd largest source of investment projects, with 118 new projects in the last financial year creating 8,384 new jobs," the statement read.  "More than 900 Indian businesses operate in the UK, and more than 600 UK businesses are finding success in India supporting more than half a million jobs across both countries," it added.  The 'Alive with Opportunity' campaign will celebrate business, trade, cultural and sporting links between the UK and India, taking advantage of major moments such as India’s hosting of the Cricket World Cup and the England-India test series starting in January. Advertisements promoting the UK will feature across billboards, in airports and across social media channels backed by a series of targeted trade missions, promotional events and marketing activations in both countries. The campaign aims to bring to life the concept of the ‘living bridge’, a phrase popularised by Prime Minister Modi to describe the relationship between the two countries based on a continuous exchange of people, ideas and culture. Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis, in a statement released by the UK High Commission, said, “The UK-India bilateral trading relationship is already worth Rs. 3.5 lakh crores; there is high ambition on both sides to increase this significantly. From the comprehensive trade deal we are negotiating to the vibrant living bridge that spans education, culture, sports and much more besides. We are bringing our people even closer together to create prosperity and jobs for both countries; this is a partnership that is alive with opportunity.” At the G20 meet, Secretary Badenoch will pitch for greater deployment of digital trade, which will cut red tape and make it easier for UK businesses of all sizes to buy and sell internationally. During her visit to New Delhi, she will meet the leaders of some of India’s major businesses, across a range of sectors, including BP, HSBC, Vodafone, Rolls Royce and Confederation of Indian Industry on Friday. She will also hold a meeting with Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran, following their announcement last month of a new 4-billion pound gigafactory in the UK. Her visit coincides with Round 12 of talks for an ambitious and comprehensive trade deal with India. She will meet with her counterpart, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, to take stock of bilateral negotiations and reach a consensus on carrying forward a deal to boost bilateral trade, which was estimated to be worth 36 billion pounds last year.
