BNP on Saturday alleged the government has been providing wrong information about coronavirus cases and fatalities. “How many people are dying of coronavirus and what information is being given about it? Many people are dying after getting infected with the virus. As per a report, about 82,000 people have been left out in government data on corona infected patients,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. He said, "This means the government is unable to take proper decisions to contain the virus. It also has failed to ensure necessary medicine and other facilities at hospitals for treatment, and work out health safety rules to control the virus. So, people are dying on the streets, on the verandahs of hospitals or in ambulances without any treatment.” The BNP leader made the remarks while distributing relief materials among the victims of riverbank erosion in Dohar-Nawabganj arranged by the party’s Dhaka district unit. He also distributed relief materials among the flood victims of Ekuria and Sholla areas. Rizvi alleged that people infected with coronavirus in rural and remote areas are facing difficulties in receiving treatment for lack of proper arrangement in this regard. “Had there been a pro-people government, it would have forced to ensure treatment for people thinking about people’s voting power. But they (current govt) don't need votes and elections as they don't care about people," he observed. The BNP leader alleged that the government has resorted to ‘extrajudicial killings’, ‘enforced disappearances’ and other ‘repressive and suppressive’ acts to retain power and perpetuate it by ‘eliminating’ its political opponents and dissidents. “Retired Army Major Sinha was killed by a police station OC, but there’s no justice and the rule of law…a UNO was hacked in the head, leaving her in a critical condition. ‘The condition of my left hand and left leg is deteriorating day by day. I am a bit of lame for my left leg and my left hand is getting totally inactive’. Mehedi Hasan Shamim, a student of Women and Gender Studies department under Dhaka University has alleged that such consequence has happened to him following being a victim of wrong treatment under Square hospital physician Krishna Prabhu. On Thursday he upheld different information and evidences at a press conference at the office of Dhaka University journalist association. Describing the incident Shamim said, as I was diagnosed with insular cavernoma (brain tumor) so I got admission in Square hospital on October 18, 2018 under Dr. Krishna Prabhu who advised me to perform immediate operation. He said if the operation was not performed then I could die anytime after stroke. He also said that he will perform the operation easily. But the doctor consciously avoided the issue of possible risk and post operative symptoms when repeatedly asked. His motive was to serve the business purpose of Square. Shamim mentioned that on January 23, 2019 the operation was done. He said, after the operation when I was in ICU my attendant (younger brother) was not informed about my physical condition. On January 25 when I asked to go to washroom the duty physician told my younger brother that my left portion of the body was not working. Later when we asked the hospital authority to give the CD of operation for further treatment but they began to dilly-dally over the matter. AH

Opposition members of Jatiya Party expressed anger in the parliament over the incident of SSC examinations taken through the old syllabus in 18 centers under 10 districts on the first day. In the parliament session on Sunday Jatiya Party member Mujibul Haque Chunnu wanted to know to Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni saying, the regular students had to sit for the examination under old question papers due to fault by the authority. Students will have to face a great loss in this regard. It will influence their education life. What action has been taken by the ministry? In response the Education Minister said, action will be taken against the involved after investigation as well as measures will be taken so that any student will not be affected. She said, there are nearly 4 thousand centers for SSC examinations. Of those these incidents took place in some centers. For whose fault the incidents happened were removed already like the center secretaries. Investigation committee was formed. Action will be taken against the involved after getting the investigation report. Dr. Dipu Moni said, the students who gave examination under wrong question papers were identified. Their answer sheets will be checked differently so that they will not be affected at any cost. Concerned all were cautioned so that this type of incident will not happen again. Another Jatiya Party member of parliament Fakhrul Imam expressed angry reaction over Education Minister’s speech. He said, the Education Minister delivered speech against the morality. Those who gave examination under wrong question paper, in what standard you would give number? What they had to write in the examination out of the syllabus? Would you give number if they do not write? Rather let’s think about whether new examination under new question paper can be arranged or not. At that time the Education Minister said, standard cannot be ensured if examination is taken afresh. Because there is no scope to take examination under the previous question paper. If new question paper is prepared that will also be different. Then what is the solution? She also requested to inform the ministry if there is any logical and acceptable alternative proposal. The High Court has acquitted wrong accused Jahalam from all the charges who is in jail following cases filed by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC). Besides, order was delivered to release him immediately. The High Court bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order on Sunday. The court said, keeping Jahalam in jail without any fault is like incident of another Joj Mia drama. If there is any syndicate involved in the incident then that should be found out. The High Court raised question over ACC investigation for arresting innocent worker Jahalam and keeping him in the jail. The court also ordered to take stern action against the persons concerned. Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Amit Das Gupta on last Monday brought the report to attention of the court published recently on a national daily titled ‘Wrong accused of 33 cases in jail: Sir, I am Jahalam, not Salek’. On pretext of that on Sunday the court summoned ACC Director General (Legal) Mainul Islam, ACC’s plaintiff of the case Director Abdullah Al Zahid, one representative of Secretary of law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry and one representative of Secretary of public security division of home ministry. The said four produced them before the High Court on Sunday. Later after hearing Jahalam was acquitted from all the charges. Besides, the court ordered to release Jahalam immediately. ACC also has withdrawn 26 cases filed against him. Mentionable, on last Monday (January 28) a report was published on a country’s reputed daily newspaper about serving jail of innocent Jahalam in 33 cases filed over 18 crore taka forgery of Sonali Bank. According to the report there were 33 cases against Abu Salek (key accused) over 18 crore taka forgery of Sonali Bank. But Jahalam is serving jail and producing him before the court instead of Abu Salek. He is a jute factory worker by profession. AH        

Founder and Trustee of Gonoshasthaya Kendra Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury expressed sorrow for delivering wrong speech over Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed. He said, I had no thought or intention to defame the Army Chief. I am extremely sorry for wrong speech and word disorder. He said these at a press conference organized at the Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital meeting room in the capital on Saturday. Dr. Zafrullah said, General Aziz is an efficient artillery military officer. He was neither GOC of Chattogram cantonment nor Commandant. In a particular period of his professional life he was the Artillery Trainer in Chattogram army camp. But I have said something mistakenly in a talk show of Somoy Television. I am expressing sorrow for that. He said, I took part in the talk show on that day with my physical weakness following special request from Somoy Television. There the guests were Nayeemul Islam Khan and former presidium member of Awami League Nuh-Ul-Alam Lenin. Dr. Zafrullah said, he (General Aziz) faced no court martial. I am extremely sorry and shocked over my wrong speech and word disorder. After the speech of Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury in the talk show telecasted on Somoy Television on Tuesday night, a protest letter was issued from the Army Headquarters. There the comments of Dr. Zafrullah were termed as irresponsible, false and totally ill motivated. On pretext of that Dr. Zafrullah held press conference on Saturday. In the press conference Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury also said, I am proud of our army. I had spent time with military officers during the liberation war. Also shared happiness and sorrow with them and at the end of the war I for the first time initiated the Cumilla Combined Military Hospital. Later I and Dr. Azizur Rahman established Dhaka Combined Military Hospital. AH
