14km traffic jam on Dhaka-Tangail highway
A severe traffic jam has been created on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway due to dense fog and heavy traffic presence. The 14-km long jam started on Friday (Jan 19) in the early morning, inflicting suffering on a huge number of passengers. Meanwhile, regular commuters are suffering from congestion on the Bangabandhu Bridge to Elenga. Cargo truck drivers are suffering the most as they are unable to arrive on schedule with the raw materaials.   The highway police said that they are working to clear the traffic jam.

5 to die in Tangail gang-rape case
A Tangail court on Thursday sentenced five people to death in a case filed over violating a 9th grader  in Madhupur. The convicts are—Sanjit, 28, son of Badan Chandra Moni Wrishi, Sagor Chandra Shil, 33, son of Sushil Chandra Shil, Sujon Moni Wrisi, 28, son of Sunil Moni Wrishi, Rajon Chandra, 26, son of Monidra Chandra, residents of Charaljani village, Gopi Chandra Shil, 30, son of Sri Digen Chandra Shil of Golabari village. Among the convicts, Sagor, Sujon, Rajon were tried in absentia. The court also fined them Tk one lakh each. According to the case statement, accused Sagor got acquainted with the girl, a madrasah student of Bhuapur, in 2012 over mobile phone.  On January 15 of the same year, when the girl was returning home from madrasah Sagor forcibly picked up her to a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. Later, he took her to his friend Rajon’s house  and forced her to marry him. As the girl refused, he confined  her to the house and violated her. Later, the five convicts took the girl to the embankment of Bongshai river on January 17 and violated her and left her there. Being informed by locals, the victim‘s relatives rescued the girl on January 18. Later, the girl filed the case with Bhuapur Police Station accusing them on the same day. The convicts made statement confessing to their guilt. Police pressed charges against the accused on October 29, 2015. After examining all the records and witnesses, Judge Khaleda Yeasmin of Tangail Women and Children Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict. Source: UNB AH

Five killed in Tangail boat capsize
At least five people drowned as a boat capsized in Kauljani River in Tangail’s Basail Upazila on Friday afternoon.  Rubel Mia, a member of Kauljani Union Parishad, said the incident took place around 4 pm when the boatman came in touch of a live wire in mid-river in Gilabari area and got electrocuted. At one stage, the passengers on board got panicked and began moving in a haphazard way that resulted in the capsize.  “Five bodies have so far retrieved from the spot,” he said, adding that it is unclear how many passengers were on board.  Shafiqul Islam, a fire-man of Fire Service and Civil Defence’s Basail station, said on information, they sent divers to the spot.  The deceased were identified as Taij Uddin, 50, the boatman; Jamela Begum, 60, wife of Miju Mia; Hamidur Rahmna Rono, 35, her son; Shah Alom, 25, son of Haidar Ali, and another 32-year-old woman.  Source: UNB AH

Man shot dead over ballot snatching at Tangail polling center
A man was shot to death in a clash among the rivals over ballot paper snatching at a polling centre in Sagardighi union in Ghatail upazila of Tangail early Thursday. The deceased was identified as Malek Mia, 45, a resident of Gupto Brindaban area. The clash erupted at Brindabon Government Primary School center in Sonamuri Gupto area around 4:00am Thursday (March 29). Superintendent of Tangail Police Sanjit Kumar Roy said that the presiding officer suspended the voting at the center soon after the incident. However, voting is underway in eight union parishads under three upazilas and a municipality in the district on Thursday. FU
