Football star Kerr pleads not guilty to racially aggravated offence
International women's football star Sam Kerr is facing trial in England after pleading not guilty to a racially aggravated offence against a London police officer, prosecutors said. The Chelsea striker and Australia captain was charged following an incident in January last year, when the Metropolitan Police said they were called to a dispute over a taxi fare. The 30-year-old Kerr, born to an Anglo-Indian father and Australian mother, is a treasured sporting figure in Australia and one of the most famous players in women's football. Australia's all-time leading scorer last year graced the cover of the FIFA video game alongside Kylian Mbappe. She is expected to face trial in February 2025. The charge, relating to "threatening, abusive or insulting" behaviour, can carry a fine or custodial sentence if proven. The alleged incident occurred before last year's World Cup, which was held in Australia and New Zealand, but was not publicly disclosed until now and appeared to take Australian football bosses by surprise. Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson said he had only found out about the allegation on Tuesday and was yet to speak to his skipper. "I was informed this morning and obviously I was surprised," he said. "I can't comment on the offence because it's a legal matter at this point. The only thing I can comment on is my experience and interaction with Sam as a person, and as a footballer. "And I have only had positive experiences," he said. Gustavsson said it was too early to say whether the allegation would rule Kerr out of selection for this summer's Paris Olympics. Kerr has been sidelined since January with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. "I think it's a bit too early to look at selection at this time and as we all know with Sam's serious injury in January, there's obviously a very big question mark whether she will even be up for selection," said Gustavsson. Very serious Football Australia CEO James Johnson called the allegation "unsettling" and "very serious". "We've got our own questions that we'd like to know. We've got to find out what actually happened," he said. "It's regarding racism, and there's no place for racism in our sport. At the same time. Sam has rights, natural justice rights, procedural rights, that she's going to work her way through and we're respectful of that." Former Australia men's team captain Craig Foster said the news was unexpected and distressing. "Racism is a very serious issue (not only) in sport. Let's acknowledge the rights of the other person involved and hope that February absolves Sam," he posted on X, formerly Twitter.  Pace, agility Kerr has been credited with helping drive the booming popularity of the women's game both in Australia and globally. She played Australian Rules football as a youngster and was convinced she would one day represent her beloved West Coast Eagles, like her elder brother. She switched to football aged 12 and made her full international debut against Italy in 2009, a precocious talent aged just 15 at the time. Known for her pace, agility and heading ability -- as well as her trademark backflip goal celebrations -- Kerr left for the United States in 2013. She went first to Western New York Flash, then Sky Blue FC in New Jersey and finally Chicago Red Stars. After moving to Chelsea in 2020, Kerr rose to a new level. The 2023 Ballon d'Or runner-up scored the only goal in Chelsea's 1-0 win over Manchester United in last season's FA Cup final. As her star has continued to rise over the years, Kerr has signed lucrative endorsement deals with the likes of Nike and Mastercard. She has scored 99 goals in 128 games in all competitions for Chelsea. In 2019, Kerr became the first Australian, man or woman, to score a hat-trick at a World Cup.   Source: BSS

Dani Alves: Brazilian soccer star goes on trial in Spain
Prosecutors are seeking a nine-year prison sentence on charges of sexual assault. Alves has been held in pre-trial detention for over a year. Soccer player Dani Alves appeared in a Barcelona court on Tuesday accused of having sexually assaulted a young woman. The Brazilian football star was arrested on January 20, 2023, and has been held in detention for over a year amid fears that he was a flight risk. Alves had offered to hand over his passport and wear a tracker, but the court considered the risk too great as Brazil does not extradite its citizens charged in foreign countries.   The alleged assault took place at a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. State prosecutors are seeking a nine-year prison sentence. Rape convictions carry a maximum prison sentence of 15 years in Spain. Alves denies charges of rape Alves has denied any wrongdoing, but he has changed his testimony several times He first said he had never seen the woman and denied any sexual contact with her, later admitting that they had in fact had a sexual encounter but claimed that it had been consensual. He said the initial lie had been to save his marriage.   His defense team had tried to discredit the alleged victim by presenting security camera footage from the club. But the court ruled that any alleged flirting could not "in any way justify an eventual sexual assault." Alves's accuser will give her testimony from behind closed doors and the court has ordered that no images may be taken of her after a video circulated on social media last month claiming to have uncovered her identity. Spain has made efforts to take accusations of assault seriously and to prosecute them fully after several high profile cases sparked outrage.   Short trial expected The 40-year-old arrived at the court on Monday, having been driven from the Brians 2 Prison where he had been held since his arrest. Alves, who had previously played for Barcelona, was ordered to set aside €150,000 ($162,000) that he would have to pay the alleged victim if found guilty. The trial is expected to last until Wednesday. He has also played for major teams such as Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain as well as helping Brazil win two Copa America trophies and an Olympic gold medal. At the time of his arrest, Alves was playing for the Mexican team Pumas, but his contract was terminated due to his legal troubles.

Videos circulating on the internet showed Kane waving to Bayern fans from a window.  Kane now has become the first Bundesliga addition to receive a transfer fee of more than 100 million euros. The transfer fee is expected to be around €115 million.  Warm welcomes from FC Bayern   Thomas Müller welcomed Harry Kane to the German champion team ahead of the expected announcement of his move to Bayern Munich. Star Wars: Princess Leia gown fails to sell at auction
A one-of-a kind white gown worn by the late Carrie Fisher in the first Star Wars film has not found a buyer, despite auctioneers hoping to get nearly $2 million. Auctioneers in the US have failed to sell an iconic white gown worn by Carrie Fisher in her role as Princess Leia in the first "Star Wars" film "A New Hope" from 1977. Propstore — a Los Angeles company which sells film and TV props and costumes — had been hoping the iconic garment would fetch $1.96 million (€1.8 million) at Wednesday's auction.  Iconic gown previously thought to have been lost "This historically significant piece is the only Princess Leia costume known to still exist from the original film," Propstore noted in its auction lot description. The long white dress — which Fisher wore in the popular film's final scene where she awards Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) medals — was long thought to have disappeared. The auction house said that the gown — created by British costume designer John Mollo — had been stored for years in a London attic until it was rediscovered and restored over an 8-month period. The costume had to be cleaned by hand to remove accumulated dust while in storage. Propstore said that the dress was restored with "archival precision" and that a special type of gauze was used on tiny holes. Propstore cited Mollo as having said that it was his belief only a single ceremonial dress was created for the film, and there was no evidence to suggest otherwise Mollo would go on to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design for Star Wars at the 50th annual Academy Awards in March 1978. Star Wars blockbuster status not enough to secure sale Star Wars is one of the world's biggest franchises and films of the series are considered to be among the first blockbuster movies in the 1970s, hauling in billions of dollars from audiences. However, its stellar status was not enough to persuade punters into parting with money. Other props auctioned on Wednesday did better than expected and managed to sell far above their estimated prices. A clown doll from the horror film "Poltergeist" fetched more than $656,000, while a grotesque spider-like head prop from John Carpenter's horror movie "The Thing from Another World" (1982) raked in more than $587,000. Russell Crowe's General Maximus costume from Gladiator sold for $125,000 after a fierce bidding contest, with the auction house saying "we were all entertained."  Other items included an outfit which Harrison Ford wore as Rick Deckard in 1982's "Blade Runner," selling for $287,000 and a costume from "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" which sold for $100,000.

Cinema mourns enigmatic Austrian star Helmut Berger
Austrian actor Helmut Berger has died at the age of 78. One of the stars of European cinema in the 1960s and 1970s, he was renowned for playing narcisisstic and sexually-ambiguous characters. The German-speaking cinema world mourned the passing of one of its past stars on Thursday, with news that Helmut Berger died in his sleep shortly before his 79th birthday. It was in such films as "The Damned" (1969) and "Ludwig II" (1972) that Berger gained recognition for his striking looks and captivating presence on screen. Who was Helmut Berger? Born in the Austrian spa town of Bad Ischl in May 1944, Berger worked as a film extra in Rome before being discovered by Italian director Luchino Visconti. Visconti, who later became Berger's partner, gave him his first big acting role in 1967's "The Witches." His collaboration with the Italian director is considered to be outstanding. Berger personified the breaking of sexual taboos in European cinema. He became known in particular for his portrayal of narcissistic and bisexual figures. He played prominent roles in Visconti's "The Damned" and "Ludwig II," in which he portrayed an insane Bavarian king. "Helmut Berger was one of the greatest and most talented actors European cinema had ever seen," said Berger's agent Helmut Werner, who announced Berger's death on his website. "His mentor, [Visconti], recognized this talent immediately. No other actor after him embodied the Bavarian fairy tale king as expressively." Visconti is often cited as having called Helmut Berger "the most beautiful man in the world." Finding world fame Berger was credited with personifying the breaking of sexual taboos in European cinema, gaining fame for his portrayal of narcissistic and bisexual figures. His fame was not limited to the German-speaking world. Berger found world fame with Vittorio De Sica's "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis," Massimo Dallamano's "Dorian Gray," and, later, in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather Part III." As such, he starred alongside cinema greats such as Elizabeth Taylor, Henry Fonda, Burt Lancaster and Silvana Mangano. Pop icon Madonna cited the androgyny of characters like Berger and David Bowie as among the most important influences on her work. Visconti died in 1976, plunging Berger into a personal crisis with few new major roles, instead appearing on talks shows and reality television. However, Berger's agent Werner said the actor had no regrets: "Many years ago, Helmut Berger told me: 'I have lived three lives. And in 4 languages! Je ne regrette rien!"
