The first season of franchise-based cricket league in the United States is going to start from July 13. England national cricket team player Jason Roy is going to sign a two-year contract with the Amirican Major League Cricket team Los Angeles Knight Riders for about three hundred thousand pounds. Through a statement, Jason Roy himself confirmed the matter. On Thursday, May 25, the popular cricket-based website ESPN Cricinfo reported, this T20 franchise league will start in August next year in Texas.  Six teams from Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Texas and Washington will participate in this tournament. Indian Premier League's (IPL) four teams own four teams of American Major League Cricket.  The Los Angeles Knight Riders are going to sign a two-year contract with Jason Roy for about three million pounds. There were rumors that Roy had canceled his contract with the England Cricket Board and moved to the United States permanently.  Later, in a statement, Roy said, "Following a bit of unwanted speculation over the last 24 hours, I wanted to clarify that I am not and never will 'walk away from England. Representing my country continues to be my proudest moment as a professional cricketer. I hope to play for England for many more years, that remains my priority. I've had clear and supportive conversations with the ECB about participating in Major league Cricket. The ECB were happy with me to play in the competition as long as they didn't have to pay me for the remainder of the contractual year. As a single format player with no central contract I wanted to take the opportunity to play this competition as there are currently no scheduling conflicts with England. It benefits me as an England player to play as much competitive cricket as possible.Just to be very clear, my priority is England cricket, especially with a World Cup soon upon us. It is for me, and for any player, the greatest honour to receive a cap to play for their country." Jason Roy played for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL. The team that Roy will play for in Major League Cricket is the same franchise.  However, nothing has been officially announced by the team yet. The team has not yet announced the name of any player in the foreign category. 

Badal Roy, a former football star and the vice-president of Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), breathed his last at a hospital in Dhaka today at 5.30 pm. He was 62. He left behind his wife, a son, a daughter and a host of well-wishers to mourn his death. Badal was diagnosed with stage-four liver cancer and was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit of the Square Hospital in the city on November 11, his family sources said. The former national team player was admitted to Asgar Ali Hospital on November 5 with breathing problems. He was later shifted to Square Hospital after his condition deteriorated further. He survived from the deadly coronavirus in August. Earlier in 2017 he survived from a brain hemorrhage following two successful surgeries at the Gleneagles Hospital and Medical Centre in Singapore. A footballer of the highest calibre in Bangladesh, Badal Roy played for Mohammedan Sporting Club for almost two decades after making his debut for the Motijheel-based outfit in 1977. He was also the captain of Mohammedan Sporting Club from 1981 to 1986. He continued serving the football in managerial post following his retirement. He acted as Mohammedan’s manager in various terms and later also became the vice-president of BFF. Despite his ill health, Badal Roy contested for the president’s post in BFF’s recent election. Ranajit Kumar Roy, the Member of Parliament of Jashore-4 constituency, was diagnosed with coronavirus on Monday night.   Confirming the information around 12:30am, Jashore Civil Surgeon Dr Sheikh Abu Shahin said the sample was collected on Monday morning and tested at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST).   Rajib Roy, son of Ranajit Kumar, told UNB that his father was admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Jashore at around 1:30am.   MP Ranajit Kumar, also the president of Bagharpara Upazila unit of Awami League, was living at his residence in Rail Road area in Jashore town.   He had been suffering from fever for the last few days, and health workers collected samples of eight people of the MP’s family on Monday, said the Civil Surgeon.   Earlier on June 2, AL leader Mohammad Nasim tested positive for coronavirus.   Health authorities have so far confirmed 68,504 coronavirus cases and 930 deaths in the country.   Source: UNB AH

Noted Dhaka University Professor Ajoy Roy, father of slain writer and blogger Avijit Roy, passed away at Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM) Hospital in the city on Monday. He was 85. Roy was admitted to the hospital with fever and breathing problem on November 25 and breathed his last at 12:35 pm at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, said Dr Ariful Haque, duty officer of the ICU. Roy was founder and president of the Shikkha Andolan Mancha (Platform for Education-Movement) and chairman of Shamriti Mancha (Platform for peace-harmony-tranquility). He was also editor in chief of Muktanwesa magazine, a Bengali publication for promoting freethinking and secular humanism and member of advisory board of the Mukto-Mona, an internet forum of freethinkers, atheists. In 2012, he received EkusheyPadak, the highest civilian award of Bangladesh. Born in Dinajpur, Roy received his Bachelor's degree and master's degree from Dhaka University, and took his Doctor of Philosophy degree in physical chemistry from Leeds University of England His only son Avijit Roy was hacked to death by machete-wielding assailants near TSC on Dhaka University campus on 26 February, 2015. Dhaka metropolitan detective branch police have arrested BNP national executive committee member Nipun Roy Chowdhury in connection with the clash in front of BNP office on Wednesday. But BNP assistant international affairs secretary singer Baby Naznin was released after detainment. The duos were detained together from Nightingale intersection at Bijoy Nagar after 8 pm. Detective branch police joint commissioner Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the matter. He said, three cases were filed with Paltan police station in connection with clash in front of BNP office on Wednesday. Nipun was arrested in connection with that case. Nipun Roy Chowdhury in the daughter of BNP vice chairman Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury and daughter in law of BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Roy. AH
