Proposal to PM for cancelling PEC exams
The ministry of primary and mass education has informed that proposal was sent to the Prime Minister to cancel Primary Education Completion (PEC) examinations of class five. State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md. Zakir Hossain has confirmed the information on Thursday. If the premier ascended the proposal then the ministry will announce. The minister said, after cancelling JSC and JDC examinations of the eight graders, now it is hard to take PEC and Ibtedayee examinations for the fifth graders. In this regard summary of the proposal was sent to the Prime Minister to take decision. If the Prime Minister ascended the proposal then the ministry will cancel the examinations. AH

PEC exams will be held under reduced syllabus: State Minister
Primary Education Completion (PEC) examinations are not going to be cancelled due to coronavirus situation. Like the other years, the PEC examinations are going to be held in this year. But syllabus will be reduced. State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md. Zakir Hossain said these while delivering his speech as the chief guest at a seminar organized by Bangladesh Education Reporters Association (ERAB) on Monday. The state minister said, if schools can be opened by September then PEC exams will be completed by December. If schools cannot be opened in September then session will be extended till February. National Primary Education Academy and Primary Education Directorate are working for preparing the revised syllabus for both of the plans. Md. Zakir Hossain said, we have no plan to stop the PEC examinations. Works are going on to upgrade the examinations by forming primary education board. We have one type of preparation if schools are opened in September. Different plan will be taken if that is not possible. No more expulsions in PEC examinations: Govt informs HC
The government informed the High Court on Wednesday that no children will be expelled during the Primary Education Completion (PEC) examinations from now on. Director General of Directorate of Primary Education informed the bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman about the government’s decision. The bench then dissolved a ruling on the matter. Advocate Jamiul Haque Faisal represented the writ petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukdar stood for the state. Shafik Mahmud represented the DG. In a suo moto rule on November 21 last year, the bench asked the authorities concerned to explain why the expulsion of children during PEC examinations should not be declared illegal. It also asked why section 11 of the directives of the Directorate of Primary Education, issued in 2018, should not be declared illegal. This particular section had directions on taking actions for ‘breaching disciplines’. The children were expelled for allegedly adopting unfair means. Lawyer AM Zamiul Haque brought the issue of PEC examinees’ expulsion to the court’s notice and sought directives in this regard. According to media reports, 15 children were expelled during last year’s Primary and Ebtedayee Terminal examinations. The court later ordered the authorities concerned to take examinations of the expelled students and publish their results by December 31. Why expulsion in PEC exams will not be declared illegal: HC
The High Court has issued rule asking to know why the expulsion of the children in Primary Education Completion (PEC) examinations will not be declared illegal. It also wanted to know why not order would be given for retaking the examinations for the students who were expelled. The High Court bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md. Mostafizur Rahman issued the rule on self motivated ground. Besides these the High Court also wanted to know why not the section 11 of the directives of primary education directorate on breaching discipline will not be declared illegal. Recently a report was published on newspaper saying that children are being expelled in the PEC examinations. Supreme Court lawyer AM Jamiul Haque brought attention about the report before the court and sought necessary directions in this regard. The court issued the rule after hearing. Secretary of primary and mass education ministry, Director General of primary education directorate, Director General of primary education academy and Chairman of madrassa education board were asked to answer the rule within two weeks. The court also fixed the date for next order on December 10. AH

82,500 students to get scholarships on PEC exams: State Minister
State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md. Zakir Hossain said, 82 thousand 5 hundred students are getting scholarships based on the results of Primary Education Completion (PEC) examinations of the current year. Of them 33 thousand students will get the scholarships in talent pool and 49 thousand 5 hundred students will get scholarships in general category till class eight. He said these at a press conference at the meeting room of the ministry on Sunday. In the press conference the State Minister said, the talent pool scholarships are distributed fixing quota in upazila level according to the proportion of participating students in PEC examination under the upazila. This time 47 thousand 928 scholarships are given from 988 unions/municipalities (three male students and three female students from each union/municipality). Of the rest 1 thousand 572 scholarships 1 thousand 530 scholarships are given in 510 upazilas (one male student, one female student and one on merit basis from each upazila).  He also said, the Prime Minister declared about revoking examinations from class one to class three and in this regard a committee was formed to implement the directions. They will fix the tools. The evaluation method will be there if examination is revoked. Examinations of class four and five will continue. At that time ministry Secretary Akram Al Hossain said, drive against coaching centers throughout the country is on. Concerned authority has been directed in this regard. Actions are being taken through mobile court. AH
