A female student of Dhaka University has filed a rape case against Vice President (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) Nurul Haque Nur. The case was filed with Lalbag police station in the capital. Lalbag division Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Biplab Bijoy Talukder confirmed the information on Monday. He said, VP Nur is one of the main accused in this case. Besides there are names of other five people in the first information report. The case was filed yesterday. Nurul Haque Nur came into the lime light during quota reformation movement in 2018 as the joint convener of Bangladesh general students rights protection council. Then on March 11, 2019 he was elected DUCSU VP after getting 11,062 votes. Nurul Haque Nur hails from Char Biswas union under Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali district. His father Idris Hawlader is a businessman and former Union Parishad member. His mother’s name is Nilufa Begum. Nur is second among three brothers and five sisters. He passed the HSC examination from Uttara High School and College in the capital in 2012. Then he got himself admitted in the English department of Dhaka University in 2013-14 session. AH

A case has been filed against Vice President (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) Nurul Haque Nur over the incident of clashes and attack on DUCSU Bhaban. In this case 29 people including VP Nur were made accused. DM Sabbir Hossain, a student of Zahurul Haq Hall filed the case with Shahbag police station on Wednesday night. Case number 38. Allegations of beating with a motive of killing along with theft were made in the case. DMP media and public relations department ADC Obaidur Rahman confirmed the information and said, a student of Zahurul Haq Hall of the university filed the case against VP Nur. 29 people were made accused in the case. Inspector of Shahbag police station Arifur Rahman was assigned to perform the investigation. The accused in the case are-DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur, convener of general students rights protection council Hasan Al Mamun, joint convener Mashiur Rahman, joint convener Faruk Hasan, Rashed Khan, APM Suhel (JnU), Abu Hanif, Aminul Islam, Tuhin Farabi (Dhanmondi Chartered University College), Mehedi Hasan, Salehuddin Sifat, Nazmul Hasan, Ayatullah Behesti, Rabiul Hossain, Arifur Rahman, Saimul Islam, Arifur Rahman, Bin Yamin Mollah, Tariqul Islam, Abdullah Hil Baki, Akram Hossain, Asif Khan, Sanaullah Haque, Ataullah, Shakil Mia, Hasanul Banna, Rabirul Islam, Raj, Ariful Islam and other 15 to 20 unnamed.    According to the first information report, a program was going on beneath the Raju Sculpture organized by Muktijuddho Mancha Mamun-Bulbul fraction protesting the legal notice to the President served by Telenor authority. After holding the program they came to Madhur Canteen and there heated words were exchanged with DUCSU VP. At that time when Dhaka University unit Chhatra League president Sanjit Chandra Das and general secretary Saddam Hossain arrived there then Nur and his companions began to chant slogans. When Sanjit and Saddam wanted to know the reason of chanting slogans they repeated the slogans. When Sanjit-Saddam were leaving the spot the accused with attempt to kill hit them. In this incident 8 people of Muktijuddho Mancha including the plaintiff of the case were injured. At that time mobile phones, money bags and wrist watches were snatched away. On the other hand, in the afternoon of December 22, VP Nur filed a case mentioning names of 37 leaders and activists of Chhatra League and DUCSU over the incident of attack on VP Nur and his followers. DUCSU social service secretary Akhtar Hossain filed the case on behalf of him with Shahbag police station on Tuesday. AH   

Muktijuddho Mancha (fraction) general secretary Al Mamun and its Dhaka University unit general secretary Yasir Arafat Turja were detained in connection with the incident of attack on DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur and the leaders and activists of the organization. Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch Abdul Baten confirmed the information. Leaders and activists of Muktijuddho Mancha (fraction) attacked DUCSU VP Nur and his followers at around 12:45 pm on Sunday. There is allegation that Chhatra League leaders and activists also took part in the attack. 34 people including Nurul Haque Nur were injured in the attack. Eyewitnesses said, the attack was originated using sticks after shutting the main gate of DUCSU building. Besides Muktijuddho Mancha leaders and activists hurled brick chips from outside. Six including VP Nur were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Of the injured Farabi was kept under life support. The other injured were provided primary treatment from the hospital. AH    

A Canadian Federal Court on September 17 allowed a judicial review plea filed by Bangladesh against Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship’s decision not to disclose immigration status of Bangabandhu’s killer Nur Chowdhury in that country. “This court’s judgment is that the application for judicial review is allowed, with costs,” said Justice James W O’Reilly of Federal Court of Ottawa, Ontario. According to the case documents, Bangladesh has been in discussions with Canadian officials since 2010 about Chowdhury’s status in Canada and has expressed concern about the delay relating to his pre-removal risk assessment (PRRA) application. In 2018, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh wrote to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship requesting that he invoke his powers under s 8(2) (m)(i) of the Privacy Act, RSC 1985, P-21,to disclose, in the public interest, information about the status of Chowdhury’s PRRA application and his immigration status in Canada. But the Canadian minister refused the Bangladesh envoy’s request on the basis that the requirements had not been met, and that there was no information-sharing agreement between Bangladesh and Canada. The High Commissioner sought to achieve a limited information-sharing agreement with Canada, but the minister refused again, prompting Bangladesh to seek judicial review of the Minister’s decision to refuse to disclose the status of Chowdhury’s PRRA application. Bangladesh in the case argued that the Canadian Minister “applied the wrong test.” In particular, Bangladesh maintained that the minister failed to consider the public interest in disclosure. In addition, Bangladesh submitted that the minister’s reasons for refusing its request were inadequate. The court in its observation said, “Bangladesh’s application for judicial review should be allowed because the minister failed to give serious consideration to the public interest that would be served if the information sought were disclosed.” Source: BSS AH

Vice President of Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) Nurul Haque Nur said, if all the demands of students are not met then strict movement will be formed. The demands included cancellation of studentship of those who were admitted without admission tests and resignation of Dean of the Business Studies faculty of Dhaka University. The general students seized the Dean office of Business Studies faculty on Wednesday noon demanding cancellation of studentship of former and current leaders of Chhatra League who were admitted without admission tests. At that moment DUCSU VP Nur said these to the newsmen. With their three-point demand the left leaning student organizations including Chhatra Union and Chhatra Front seized the office of Business Studies faculty Dean Shibly Rubaitul Islam at around 12 pm according to their prefixed programs. At that time incident of velitation took place between Chhatra League activists and general students. AH   

The law enforcement agency members have arrested one of the main accused of Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case. The madrasa student Nusrat was set fire to death by miscreants at Sonagazi upazila under Feni district. The accused named Nur Uddin was arrested from Mymensingh. He was arrested from Seed Store area under Bhaluka upazila on Thursday night. An officer of Bhaluka police station, unwilling to be named, confirmed the information on Friday afternoon. He said, after arresting Nur Uddin was sent to Dhaka. Earlier, another accused in the case Sonagazi municipal Awami League acting general secretary and municipal councilor Moksud Alam was arrested from a residential hotel in Dhaka.  It was known that Nur Uddin and Shahadat Hossain alias Shamim were known as close associates of the madrasa principal Siraj Uddoula. Allegation came in that they were directly involved in Nusrat killing. More than one eyewitness said that the duos were seen on April 5 night and on April 6 on the day of incident Nur Uddin was seen at the madrasa main gate. Both of them are number 2 and 3 accused in the case. When the principal was arrested on March 27, after that a committee was formed named ‘Siraj Uddoula Saheber Mukti Parshad’. Nur Uddin was the convener of the 20-member committee while Shahadat was the joint convener. Two phases human chain and demonstration programs were held on March 28 and 30 under their leadership. There was allegation that group members of Nur Uddin were threatening the supporters of Nusrat. Although another accused Shahadat Hossain is yet to be arrested. AH       

Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) has become active again after 28 years of interval. The journey of DUCSU has begun with its executive meeting on Saturday. In this meeting proposal was placed to make Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as DUCSU lifetime member but in this regard the newly elected Vice President (VP) Nurul Haque Nur expressed his disagreement. After the meeting he told the newsmen, today's executive meeting was the introductory episode. There discussions were held on different subjects. At that time proposal was placed to make Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the lifetime member of DUCSU. But Nur said, we have not reached in a solution in this regard. He said, this election is a questioned election. There is controversy regarding the election. From that point of view I do not think that the honorable Prime Minister should be declared as the lifetime member here. In this point some members including me opposed the proposal. Taking the floor DUCSU General Secretary Golam Rabbani said, everybody except Nur opposed the proposal of making Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as lifetime member. The meeting started at 11 am at DUCSU bhaban on Saturday. DUCSU president and Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman presided over the meeting. The newly elected committee members including VP Nurul Haque Nur and GS Golam Rabbani joined the meeting. At the beginning Golam Rabbani delivered the welcome speech. Later one minute silence was observed in remembrance of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the liberation war. AH  

Nurul Haque Nur has formally announced to take charge as the Vice President (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU). His announcement came in at a press conference held at Modhu's Canteen at around 3:30 pm on Friday organized by Bangladesh General Students Rights Protection Council. In the press conference Nur said, the expectation of the nation was not met centering the DUCSU election which was held after long 28 years of interval. I am going to take the charge keeping respect for the opinions of the students who voted me in the midst of so much vote rigging. I want to work for the students. As well as our demand for reelection will continue. At that time Convener of Bangladesh General Students Rights Protection Council Hasan Al Mamun said, on behalf of our organization decision was taken in principle to take charge as the VP by Nurul Haque Nur and as the Social Service Secretary by Akhtar Hossain. Vice President (VP) elect of DUCSU Nurul Haque Nur said, the students of Dhaka University (DU) want reelection and I am agreed to their demand. I have not taken the charge of VP, whether I would take the charge or not- the decision will come through after consultation with the students with whom I waged movement. He said these at press conference at Madhu's Canteen of Dhaka University on Sunday afternoon. Nur said, my stance was clear from the beginning. I want reelection after expressing the same opinion with the general students. The DUCSU election that was held after 28 years, has tarnished the tradition of DU. Being a VP candidate I was also under attack. Teachers were involved in irregularities. Meanwhile, the panels which boycotted the election will observe class abstaining and sit in program in front of Vice Chancellor's office on Monday to press their five-point demand. The announcement came from the different press conferences by the student organizations. The demands are- DUCSU election cancellation, declaring reschedule for election, resignation of VC, withdrawal of the cases and punishment for the attackers. Nurul Haque Nur said, five panels will continue their movement all together over the issue of reelection. He said, Prime Minister is the ultimate person of the state. I went to Ganabhaban keeping my respect on her. I went there after consulting the matter with the leaders and activists of my organization. Nur said, DUCSU election is a matter of Dhaka University, not for the government. We were called as the winners. I have informed the Prime Minister about irregularities in the election, besides discussion was also held about  problems of the university including residential problem. AH           

‘I have lost my mother when I was two and half years old. After losing my mother I had found reflections of my mother in one of my school teachers. Now I have found reflections of my mother in another person and she is the Prime Minister.’ The newly elected Vice President (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Nurul Haque Nur said these on Saturday when he was delivering speech during exchange of greetings with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence in Ganabhaban in the capital. Nur said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s bold leadership and development activities have taken her to a praiseworthy position in the world. I want cooperation from the Prime Minister to make DUCSU active. The DUCSU election was held on March 11. But raising allegation of rigging all the student organizations except Chhatra League boycotted the voting on that day. After elected as VP, Nurul Haque Nur demanded reelection in all the posts except that of VP and Social Service Secretary. Later he demanded reelection in all DUCSU posts. Confusion was also created over his oath taking. AH
