Awami League (AL) announced the names of 48 candidates for the reserved seats for women in the 12th national parliament today (Feb 14). Actress Tarana Halim, former State Minister, is also nominated for reserved seat. AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader announced the names on Wednesday (Feb 14) afternoon. Tarana Halim was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2009 in the reserved seat. Later in 2014, she was re-elected as a Member of Parliament in the 10th national parliamentary election. Earlier, on Wednesday (February 14), Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met the Awami League nomination aspirents for the reserved seat at Ganabhaban.

The returning officer has canceled the nomination of actress Mahia Mahi as an independent candidate for Rajshahi-1 (Tanor-Godagari) constituency. Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ahmed canceled her nomination paper after verifying on Sunday (December 3) morning. DC said, the names and signatures of all the voters given by Mahia Mahi as an independent candidate were not found to be correct. Usually 10 voters of a candidate are verified. The information of three of them was not found. The returning officer also said that the information of two of these three was not correct.  Among them, they found a voter of Chapainawabganj.  Hence, her candidature was cancelled.

Three members of the current cabinet were deprived from the nomination of Awami league in the 12th national parliament election.  Party's general secretary Obaidul Quader announced the names of candidates at a press conference organized at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital on Sunday afternoon. The Ministers of State who were dropped are Minister of State for Culture KM Khalid, Minister of State for Labor Begum Mannujan Sufian and Minister of State for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossain. According to the list, Khulna-3 Constituency MP, Minister of State for Labor and Employment Begum Mannujan Sufian did not get nomination. SM Kamal Hossain has been nominated for his seat. MP of Kurigram-4 Constituency, State Minister of Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Md. Zakir Hossain. Md. Biplab Hasan has been nominated for his seat. Md. Zakir Hossain was serving as a member of district Awami League and president of Roumari Upazila Awami League. He was elected in the 11th parliament elections.  Minister of State for Culture KM Khalid has been dropped from the race for MP nomination. In his place, Awami League has nominated Md. Abdul Hai Akanda. The party has finalized the list of candidates in consecutive meetings since Thursday, but it has not been officially announced so far. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held an exchange meeting with the aspirants at Ganobhaban after 10 am on Sunday before the final candidate list was published.

PM Sheikh Hasina who is Awami League President and party's parliamentary nomination board chief as well will exchange her views with Awami League's nomination aspirants for the 12th Jatiya Sangsad election at Ganabhaban at 10 am by tomorrow.  A press release which is signed by Awami League office secretary Barrister Biplab Barua said, "Awami League President and party's parliamentary nomination board chief Sheikh Hasina will chair the meeting." All the member's of Awami League's National Election Steering Committee formed for the 12th national parliamentary elections and party's all nomination aspirants are requested to attend the meeting on time with photo-copy of NID card and received copy of nomination papers (photo-copy of online forms) by Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader.

Awami League (AL) President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on saturday (November 18)  inaugurated selling of party's nomination forms for the 12th parliamentary elections as she also collected for her. The AL chief opened the nomination paper sale at the party's central office on 23 Bangabandhu Avenue in the city this morning. AL Advisory Council Member Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed collected the nomination form for Sheikh Hasina to participate in the polls of Gopalganj-3 constituency as Gopalganj AL President Mahmud Ali Khan and General Secretary B M Sahabuddin Azam were present. At the party headquarters, 10 booths for eight divisions have been set up to sell the nomination forms among the aspirant candidates for the parliamentary elections slated for January 7. The party aspirants can collect and submit the nomination papers from 10 am on November 18 to 4 pm on November 21 every day. The interested party men can collect and submit the application forms for party nomination from the specific booths installed at the AL Bangabandhu Avenue central office in the capital. Nomination forms for the candidates of Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Chattogram divisions is being distributed from the second floor of the party office, while the aspirants from Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions will have to collect nomination papers from third floor of the office. Nomination papers of all divisions will be received on the ground floor of the central office. The AL nomination aspirants can collect and submit their application forms by themselves or through a representative of the candidate without any extra gathering at the party office. At the time of collection of the application form, a candidate must bring a photocopy of National Identity Card (NID). Mobile number, name of three previous posts held by the aspirants and current organisational identity must be clearly mentioned on the photocopy. Member of Parliament from Dhaka-10 constituency Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has bought Awami League nomination papers for the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections. Besides, another Member of Parliament Haji Mohammad Salim also has bought the nomination papers. Apart from them, Nazmul Haque and MA Rashid have collected nomination papers for the DSCC elections. On the other hand, for the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) elections the running mayor Atiqul Islam has bought the nomination papers. Besides, Yaz Al Fakir, Nazmul Haque, Shahidullah Osmani have collected the nomination papers. Their leaders and activists collected the nomination papers on Wednesday from the Awami League president’s political office at Dhanmondi in the capital on behalf of them.   At around 3 pm Mayor Atiqul’s Personal Assistant Saifuddin Imon and younger brother Abu Mahmud Khan collected the nomination papers on behalf of him. At around 3:15 pm former organizing secretary of Dhaka metropolitan south unit of Awami League, Morshed Kamal collected the nomination papers on behalf of Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh. The Awami League nomination papers will be distributed till Friday. Meanwhile, the Election Commission declared the election schedule for the Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations on Sunday (December 22). According to the schedule the voting of both the city elections will take place on January 30. AH

BNP has nominated its Assistant International Affairs Secretary Rumeen Farhana for the reserved women seat in the Jatiya Sangsad. She submitted her nomination paper to the Returning Officer and Election Commission Joint Secretary Abul Kashem at the commission on Monday noon. Returning Officer Abul Kashem told the newsmen, today was the last day of submitting nomination papers for the reserved seat for women in the Jatiya Sangsad. Scrutinize of nomination papers will be held on Tuesday and the last date of withdrawal of nomination paper is May 28. If nobody submits nomination papers on Monday and if Barrister Rumeen Farhana does not withdraw her nomination paper within May 28 then after the stipulated time she will be declared elected without contest. There are BNP’s five Members of Parliament in the Jatiya Sangsad. According to that they can nominate one member for the reserved seat. Monday was the last day of submitting nomination papers for that seat. In the eleventh national parliament election Rumeen Farhana sought nomination from Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail-Ashuganj) constituency. But Ukil Abdus Sattar was given the nomination in that constituency. The Election Commission (EC) has cancelled the nomination paper of Jatiya Party’s candidate and band singer Shafin Ahmed in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-election. After scrutiny of nomination papers on Saturday his nomination paper was cancelled over allegation of loan default. But the EC declared nomination papers of five persons as valid including Awami League nominated candidate Md. Atiqul Islam. Assistant Returning Officer Nazrul Islam said that Shafin’s nomination paper was cancelled as he is a loan defaulter. Shafin Ahmed submitted his nomination paper for the post of mayor in DNCC by-election last Wednesday (January 30). Shafin Ahmed, lead vocal of band Miles stepped in to the field of politics last year after declaring his participation in the mayoral election suddenly. After the death of DNCC mayor Annisul Huq last year the EC announced schedule for the by-election and then Shafin Ahmed declared him as a candidate for the post of mayor under Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM). But later he changed the party and joined Jatiya Party. In the DNCC by-election the valid candidates are- Md. Atiqul Islam of Awami League, Boby Hajjaj of Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM), Md. Anisur Rahman Dewan of National Peoples’ Party (NPP), Shahin Khan of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and Mohammad Abdur Rahim as an independent candidate. AH    

Bangladesh Awami League nominated candidate Atiqul Islam collected nomination form for the mayoral by-election of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). Atiqul Islam’s Coordinator Mizanur Rahman collected the forms from the Returning Officer’s office of DNCC at around 2 pm on Sunday. Mentionable, the DNCC by-election for the mayor post was scheduled to hold on February 26 last year following death of the then mayor Annisul Huq. At that time Awami League nominated Atiqul Islam as their candidate in the election. The DNCC mayoral by-election is scheduled to be held on February 28. AH    

Atiqul Islam has got the nomination from Awami League to run in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor post by-election. Besides, Syeda Jakia Nur Lipi was nominated from the party for by-election of Kishoreganj-1 constituency. She is sister of late minister Syed Ashraful Islam. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader declared their names on Saturday at Prime Minister’s official residence Gonobhaban in the capital. Earlier, the names of these candidates were finalized at the meeting of Awami League parliamentary nomination board and local government nomination board. Later the names were declared at a press conference. The court suspended the by-election of DNCC on January 17 last year. After the hearing of the writ petition the High Court bench comprising Justice Nayeema Haider and Justice Jafar Ahmed delivered the order. At that time Atiqul Islam got the Awami League nomination. In the DNCC election held on April 28, 2015 Annisul Huq elected mayor after getting Awami League nomination. But on November 30, 2017 mayor Annisul Huq died in London and Election Commission declared the mayor post vacant on December 4. On the other hand Syed Ashraful Islam won the eleventh national parliament election from Kishoreganj-1 constituency. As he died on January 3 the Election Commission later declared the seat vacant. AH
