Former mayor Ekramul Haque Titu has been re-elected as the mayor of Mymensingh City Corporation (MCC) by a significant margin. . He got 1 lakh 35 thousand 959 votes in this election. Returning Officer Belayet Hossain Chowdhury announced the results after counting the votes at Tarek Memorial Auditorium in the city at around 9:30 pm on Saturday (March 9). The total number of voters in this election was 336, 496. Of these, 163,872 were male and 172,615 are female were female voters. In addition, there were third gender voters.

Three people including a woman and her daughter were killed and two others injured as a truck hit an auto-rickshaw in Mymensingh on Monday (Jan 22) afternoon. The accident occurred on Mymensingh-Tangail highway at Cherumondol area in Muktagacha upazila around 2pm.  The deceased were identified as Hasina Khatun, 35, wife of Mawlana Nazrul Islam of Binodbari Manpur village, her daughter Adiba, 3, and Mrinal Chandra Das, 42, of Dawgaon union in the upazila.    Md Faruk Ahmed, Officer-in-charge of Muktagacha Police Station, confirmed the matter. Sushanta Kumar Dey, Muktagacha Fire Service Station officer, said a Tangail-bound truck hit an auto-rickshaw and overturned at Cherumondol area, leaving three people dead on the spot and two others injured. The injured were rescued and sent to a hospital. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to police.  The OC also said the truck driver managed to flee the scene after the accident. Legal action will be taken in this regard.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today inaugurated and laid foundation stones of 103 development schemes to ensure overall development of Mymensingh division. She inaugurated 73 development projects involving Taka 570.07 crore and laid foundation stones of 30 other schemes worth Tk 2,762.27 crore in Mymensingh Division, unveiling the plaque at a grand public rally held at the Circuit House ground in the afternoon. The entire Mymensingh has taken a festive look with colourful posters, banners and festoons and Sheikh Hasina's portraits. Among the development projects, Sheikh Hasina opened mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman based on the photo adjacent to the central Shaheed Minar of Mymensingh, a 50-bed Dr Mushfiqur Rahman Shubo Memorial Islamic Mission Hospital, Construction of an auditorium cum community center having 1000 seat at Trishal Upazila, Institute of Health Technology, Construction of embankment to protect Charalgi Union of Gafargaon from erosion of the Brahmaputra river, new Sadar Upazila Parishad Hospital, Gorbakura-Karaitli land port at Haluaghat, main building of District Lawyers Association- Shaheed Advocate Nazrul Islam Bhavan and Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Women's College.   Besides, the projects include construction of Deshrat-Sheikh Hasina Hall in Bangladesh Agricultural University, Sheikh Rehana Hall, Rosy Jamal Hall, 500-bed 5-storey student hostel in Government Anand Mohan College and laying foundation stone of electricity distribution system development project. With sincere and relentless efforts by the Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Mymensingh has changed because of the implementation of massive development projects. Huge development is visible in all sectors, including agriculture, education, health and infrastructure, in the district in the last 14 years under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visionary leadership. There was no such development during the tenure of any government in the past. Common people of Mymensingh are now enjoying the benefits of this development. The people of Mymensingh had a long-standing demand to upgrade Mymensingh Medical College Hospital from a 500-bed hospital to a 1000-bed one. The Prime Minister has increased the beds of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital from 500 to 1000 beds in 2013. People of greater Mymensingh, including Sherpur, Jamalpur, Tangail, Netrakona and Kishoreganj, along with North Bengal, Sunamganj, Narsingdi and Gazipur are now enjoying the treatment and medical services from Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Sheikh Hasina has fulfilled all the demands of the local people that include establishment of an education board and dredging of the old Brahmaputra river, along with establishment of Mymensingh into a division and city corporation.

Seven people were killed as a truck hit a standing passenger bus on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh district this afternoon.   The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.    Officer-in-Charge of Trishal Thana Moin Uddin said the accident took place in Chelerghat area at around 3 pm on the highway. Five people died on the spot while two succumbed to their injuries on way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.    The critically injured passengers were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.   Police and Fire Fighters jointly participated in the rescue operation. Seven passengers were killed in a collision between a bus and CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Tarakanda area on Mymensingh-Netrokona regional highway. The accident occurred at around 1 pm on Sunday. The deceased were identified as- Faruk Ahmed (42), Nizam Uddin (45), Julekha Khatun (30), Rakibul (29), Masuma Khatun (25), Shohag (30) and a new born baby. Locals said, seven people died on the spot when a bus of Shahjalal Paribahan pushed the auto-rickshaw at Gachhtala area on Mymensingh-Netrokona regional highway. According to the eyewitnesses, an auto-rickshaw from Shambhuganj bridge was heading towards Gouripur. On the way the auto-rickshaw tried to overtake a mahindra. At that time a Dhaka bound bus hit the auto-rickshaw. Seven passengers of the auto-rickshaw including a new born baby died on the spot. In this regard Tarakanda police station Officer in Charge Abul Khayer said, the passengers died on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Of the deceased three were male, three female and one new born baby. AH

Eight people were killed in separate road crashes in Bhaluka and Nandail upazilas of Mymensingh district Saturday morning. Six people were killed as a bus rammed a private car on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in front of Bhaluka Degree College in the morning. The victims included two women and a minor child. However, the details about the deceased could not be known yet. Officer-in-charge of Bhaluka, said the Dhaka-bound bus of  ‘Imam Paribahan’ hit the private car while the bus was taking u-turn around 7:45 am, leaving the six people dead on the spot. On information, police and fire service members recovered the bodies. Meanwhile, two cattle traders Saidul, 42, and Mostakim, hailing from Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj district, were killed as a truck hit another one in Jashora area of Nandail upazila around 6am. Monsur Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Nandail Police Station, said the accident took place when the cattle- laden truck from Roumari hit another stationary truck on Mymensingh-Kishoreganj regional road, leaving one dead on the spot and another injured. Ekramul Haque Titu has got the nomination from Awami League for the mayor post in the forthcoming Mymensingh City Corporation (MCC) election. The final decision about his nomination came in at a meeting of Awami League central working committee that took place on Friday at Prime Minister’s official residence at Ganabhaban in the capital. Awami League Deputy Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua confirmed the matter. On October 14 last year a gazette was published promoting Mymensingh municipality into City Corporation. At that time Ekramul Haque Titu was the municipal mayor. Later on October 16 he was given charge as the Administrator of MCC. Mymensingh district is two hundred and fifty years old. Mymensingh municipality was formed in 1869. It is the 12th City Corporation of the country. The size of this City Corporation is 91.315 square kilometers. The number of voters is 3 lakh 2 thousand 109. In the MCC election voting will take place on May 5 next. The last date of nomination papers submission is on April 8. Scrutiny on April 10 and last date of nomination withdrawal is on April 17.   AH    

The Election Commission (EC) has declared the election schedule for newly formed Mymensingh City Corporation (MCC). Voting will take place on May 5. The decision was taken at the 46th meeting of the commission on Monday. Later EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed declared the election schedule. According to the declared schedule, in this election EVM will be used in all the 130 centers under MCC. In the election the last date of nomination papers submission is on April 8, scrutinize on April 10 and last date of nomination withdrawal is on April 17. EC Secretary said, there are 46 wards under MCC. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used in all the centers during the election. Mymensingh was declared as City Corporation in April last year. It is the 12th City Corporation of the country. The decision of turning Mymensingh as the City Corporation was taken at the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reform (NICAR) meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair held on April 1 last year. Three members of a family were killed and three others injured as a microbus carrying them turned turtle on Sherpur upazila road in Mymensingh district on Thursday. The accident happened in Alalpur area on Fhulpur-Sherpur regional road in the morning. The deceased were identified as Hamid Member, 60, his wife Sahera Begum, 55 and Shafiqul Islam, 40. All of the victims hailed from Sherpur. Kotwali Police Station OC Mahmudul Islam said six people were heading to Dhaka by a private car. The driver lost control over its streering and the car upturned in the area, leaving tree people of the same family died on the spot and three others wounded. He also said that the bodies were recovered and kept in the hospital morgue. The injured - Nuruddin Ahmed, son of Abdul Hamid, his daughter Fatema Begum and driver of microbus Kawser Ahmed - were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, the OC added.   MHK

Police have recovered bullet hit dead body of a top dug queen in Mymensingh. She was identified as Rehena. Her dead body was recovered from Gandropa area of sadar upazila on Sunday early morning. Officer in Charge of district Detective Branch Police Ashikur Rahman said, the death may occur while infighting between two groups within them over sharing money of drug trading. But the details are yet to be known. Officer in Charge (Intelligence) of Kotwali model police station Mushfiqur Rahman told Rtv online, local inhabitants informed us that body of a woman was lying down on the ground at Gandropa area. We went to the spot and found the bullet hit body. Later she was identified as Rehena. Different sources including police have claimed that Rehena was running booming business of drugs behind a cinema hall at Cantonment area of Mymensingh city. There were several cases filed against her. On May 31 police conducted day long drive at the drug hub in the city. At that time Rehena managed to escape but police detained several including her brother Billal, Partha, Rubel and younger sister Sharifa.   AH
