5 to die in Tangail gang-rape case
A Tangail court on Thursday sentenced five people to death in a case filed over violating a 9th grader  in Madhupur. The convicts are—Sanjit, 28, son of Badan Chandra Moni Wrishi, Sagor Chandra Shil, 33, son of Sushil Chandra Shil, Sujon Moni Wrisi, 28, son of Sunil Moni Wrishi, Rajon Chandra, 26, son of Monidra Chandra, residents of Charaljani village, Gopi Chandra Shil, 30, son of Sri Digen Chandra Shil of Golabari village. Among the convicts, Sagor, Sujon, Rajon were tried in absentia. The court also fined them Tk one lakh each. According to the case statement, accused Sagor got acquainted with the girl, a madrasah student of Bhuapur, in 2012 over mobile phone.  On January 15 of the same year, when the girl was returning home from madrasah Sagor forcibly picked up her to a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. Later, he took her to his friend Rajon’s house  and forced her to marry him. As the girl refused, he confined  her to the house and violated her. Later, the five convicts took the girl to the embankment of Bongshai river on January 17 and violated her and left her there. Being informed by locals, the victim‘s relatives rescued the girl on January 18. Later, the girl filed the case with Bhuapur Police Station accusing them on the same day. The convicts made statement confessing to their guilt. Police pressed charges against the accused on October 29, 2015. After examining all the records and witnesses, Judge Khaleda Yeasmin of Tangail Women and Children Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict. Source: UNB AH

5 get death sentence for murder after gang-rape
A court in Chapainababganj has handed death sentence for five persons in connection with killing after gang-raping a young girl named Ayesha Khatun. In association with this all the convicts are also fined one lakh taka each. Judge of District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 and Additional District and Session Judge Md. Shawkat Ali delivered the order on Thursday. The death sentence awarded convicts are- Nayan Rabidas (28) son of Shyamapada Rabidas from Malbagdanga village under Chapainababganj sadar upazila, Prashanta Rabidas (22) son of Biren Rabidas from Sonapatti village, Nitaichandra Rabidas (26) son of Ratan Rabidas from Chakpara village, Subhash Das (42) son of Suchen Das and Prashanta Rabidas (24) son of Khokan Rabidas. Nayan Kumar Rabidas and Prashanta Rabidas (22) were present before the court while delivering the verdict. The rest are absconding. The court acquitted three as the allegations against them were not proved. Quoting the case information Additional PP Anjuman Ara Begum said, on June 14, 2015 police recovered dead body of Ayesha Khatun (20) daughter of Mafizul Islam of Kalinagar Bablabona village under sadar upazila from a pond of Maharajpur melar mor area under sadar upazila. At first her reason of death was not known but the postmortem report mentioned that the young girl was killed after rape. Then on August 15 in the same year Sub Inspector of the sadar police station Shamim Akter filed a case accusing unknown persons. Later the Investigation Officer of the case Inspector of sadar police station Sarwar Rahman submitted the charge sheet on December 14 accusing eight persons. It was mentioned in the charge sheet that on June 13 accused Nayan following his affair with Ayesha Khatun called her and strangled Ayesha to death with his associates after gang-rape. AH

AL leader arrested over Noakhali gang-rape
Police have arrested two people, including a former UP member of Ward No. 4 of Charjubli Union and also local Awami League leader Ruhul Amin, in connection with the gang-rape of a woman in Subarnachar of Noakhali after December 30 eelction. They were arrested in separate drives conducted in the early hours of Thursday, said Charjabbar Police Station OC Nizam Uddin. With this, the number of arrestees over the incident is five, said the OC. District Superintendent of Police Elias Sharif said Ruhul Amin was arrested from a poultry farm in the district headquarters while Bechu, another accused, was arrested from a brick field in Senbagh upazila in the district. The operation is underway to arrest the remaining accused in the case, said OC Nizam. Sohel, the main accused, son of Ismail Hossain of Madya Bagya village, was held from a brick field at Moheshpur in Barura upazila of Comilla on Wednesday. Earlier on Tuesday night, Swapan, 35, son of Abdul Mannan of Madya Bagya village, was arrested from Ramgati upazila of Lakshmipur district while Basu, 40, son of Ahmad Ullah of the same village, was held on Monday. Police said a group of people including Sohel, Hanif, Swapan, Chowdhury, Bechu, Basu, Abul, Mosharraf and Salahuddin vandalized the house of a middle-aged woman. At one stage, they tied the woman's husband and daughter and took the woman outside the house and gang-raped her. The woman and her husband were admitted to 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital the next day. Later, the victim's husband filed a case with Charjabbar police station accusing nine people.   MHK
