India crush England with record win to lead Test series 2-1
Yashasvi Jaiswal hit an unbeaten double century to help India to its biggest-ever win Sunday, crushing England by 434 runs in the third Test to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Chasing 557 for victory, England's batting fell like a pack of cards with the loss of eight wickets in the final session to be dismissed for 122 on day four in Rajkot. "In Test cricket... when you're playing well you have to make it big," Jaiswal told broadcasters after the stunning win. "Test cricket is hard, but I thought that when I'm in there, I need to give my 100 percent," he said. Ravindra Jadeja got Mark Wood out for 33 as the final wicket -- and his fifth -- and he kissed the pitch as India registered their greatest win in terms of runs. It was England's second-biggest Test loss since their 562-run defeat to Australia in 1934. England lost their openers, including first-innings centurion Ben Duckett run out on four, before tea and Jadeja then rattled the middle-order with his left-arm spin. Jadeja was named player of the match for his seven wickets in the Test and 112 with the bat in the first innings. Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root extended their poor run in the five-match series, out for four and seven respectively. Skipper Ben Stokes attempted to resist the Indian bowling but fell lbw to left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav for 15 in his 100th Test. "We're 2-1 down in the series but still have two games left," Stokes said. "We leave this game behind -- know we've got to win the next two to win the series." 'Bat till the end' The left-handed Jaiswal stood out with his 214 off 236 balls to flay the opposition attack before India declared their second innings on 430-4. The opener returned to bat in the morning session after he retired hurt on 104 late on day three due to back pain. "Today when I came, I wanted to make sure that I take the game forward and bat till the end," Jaiswal said. He raised his second double ton in consecutive matches with a single off Root and jumped for joy. Jaiswal hit a record-equalling 12 sixes in his knock, which included three straight hits over the fence off James Anderson -- a first for the veteran quick who has 696 wickets in 185 Tests. Jaiswal now stands level with former Pakistan great Wasim Akram, who also hit 12 sixes in an innings against Zimbabwe in 1996. He put on marathon stands that included an unbeaten 172-run partnership with debutant Sarfaraz Khan, who made 68 for his second half-century of the match. The 22-year-old Jaiswal, who hit a match-winning 209 in the second Test, remains the leading batsman in the series with 545 runs. Indian bowlers set up victory after they bowled England out for 319 in the first innings, after the tourists' batting collapsed from 299-5 despite the absence of star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Saturday. Ashwin, who left the Test midway on day two due to a family emergency hours after taking his 500th Test wicket, returned to the field and got his 501st wicket on the fourth day. Off-spinner Ashwin, 37, became only the ninth bowler in Test history and the second Indian after fellow spinner Anil Kumble (619) to reach 500 wickets. Skipper Rohit Sharma's 131 and his 204-run stand with the left-handed Jadeja steered India to 445 in the first innings after they elected to bat. England won the opener by 28 runs but India bounced back in the second match. The fourth Test starts on Friday in Ranchi. Source: BSS

Homelessness climbs sharply in rural England
A charity found that rough sleeping in rural areas has increased 40% in five years. Britain has been hit particularly hard by the cost-of-living crisis and record high property prices. Rural England has seen a 40% increase in homelessness over the past five years, a British non-profit organization said on Tuesday. The countryside charity CPRE said homelessness in the countryside had increased from 17,212 in 2018 to 24,143 in 2023. CPRE found that the problem is more severe in rural areas than many of England's towns and cities, including London, Leeds or Norwich. Across the UK, every 15 people per 100,000 are estimated to be homeless. The charity said 12 local authorities, designated as predominantly rural, had levels of rough sleeping above the national average. More rough sleepers in Boston than London In one town, Boston in Lincolnshire, there were 38 homeless per 100,000 people, compared to 23 per 100,000 in the United Kingdom capital. People sleeping rough are defined as those sleeping in the open air, tents, makeshift shelters or buildings not meant for human habitation. The charity found that the crisis is being fed by record house prices, stagnating wages, huge waiting lists for public housing and the rise of second homes and short-term lets, including Airbnb. UK inflation hit a multidecade high of 11.1% in October 2022, partly thanks to the soaring cost of energy and food. Lack of housing hits rents, mortgages CPRE also decried a severe lack of housing, saying it has exacerbated the country's cost of living crisis. The charity said 300,000 people are waiting for social housing in rural England — where the average house sells for around £420,000 ($535,000, €483,700). Another housing charity, Shelter, estimated that levels of homelessness across England this Christmas are likely to be 14% higher than last year. It calculated that on any given night there were close to 310,000 people in some form of homelessness, the majority in temporary accommodation. UK needs millions more homes CPRE called for the UK government to redefine the term "affordable housing" so it correlates to average local incomes, and to dramatically increase the available housing stock. In February, the Centre for Cities think tank estimated that the UK (England, Scotland, Norther Ireland and Wales) was short of 4 million homes, with much of the shortage in England. Its researchers predicted it would likely take 50 years to resolve the housing crisis, based on the government's objective of building 300,000 new homes per year. According to the UK's National House Building Council, 191,801 new homes were registered across Britain in 2022, a third less than the government target.

Forde propels West Indies to series-clinching win over England
A dream debut by Matthew Forde helped guide the West Indies to a series-clinching four-wicket win over England in the decisive third and final match of their One-Day International series at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday. In a rain-affected encounter, the 21-year-old Barbadian delighted the few home supporters among a majority English audience with figures of three for 29 as the tourists were restricted to 206 for nine off 40 overs after being put in. Then, with the West Indies stuttering at 135 for six in pursuit of a revised target of 188 off 34 overs, Forde (13 not out) joined Romario Shepherd (41 not out) in an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 56 to take the Caribbean team to their first ODI series triumph over England for 16 years and their first at home against these opponents for 25 years. "This is a dream come true," said an overwhelmed Forde, who was named Man of the Match, in reflecting on his contribution. "The wicket was a bit tacky so it was just about bowling the right line and length. And when I came in to bat, it was just about turning over the strike and getting Sheppy on strike as often as possible." Brought into the team in place of Oshane Thomas and given use of the new ball, the hometown boy claimed wickets in his first two overs and added a third in his fifth to put England immediately on the back foot. Ben Duckett offered the only substantial resistance with a pugnacious innings of 71, getting meaningful support from Liam Livingstone (45) in a stand of 88 for the sixth wicket after they had slumped to 49 for five in the tenth over. Forde removed Phil Salt to a low catch at mid-off and then had Zak Crawley taken at second slip. He added the wicket of the other opener, Phil Jacks, two overs later via a wicketkeeper's catch. Jacks was almost the unlikely hero for England with the ball, taking three wickets for 22 runs, including topscorer Keacy Carty for 50, to seem to tilt the balance of the match in his side's favour. - A few short - However Jacks and the other slow bowling options Rehan Ahmed and Liam Livingstone could not separate the pair of Shepherd and Forde and when 24 runs were smashed off returning seamer Gus Atkinson in the 30th over, the result was effectively sealed. "We were a few short with the bat," said England captain Jos Buttler in reflecting on the loss. "We fought hard with the ball but it just wasn't enough. This is the start of a long journey for this side. Hopefully we can build something for the future." For West Indies captain Shai Hope, who took the Man of the Series award with a tally of 192 runs at an average of 96 across the three matches, both the result and the contributions of younger players were encouraging. "It's great to see these other guys chipping in with the bat and as long as we continue in this vein it can develop into a very good batting group," he said.   Source: BSS

Afghanistan defeat England in World Cup
Afghanistan pulled off one of the greatest World Cup shocks on Sunday when they defeated defending champions England by 69 runs in New Delhi. Chasing 285 to win, after opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz had hit a blistering 80, England were bowled out for 215 despite Harry Brook's 66 with spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan claiming three wickets each. "It's a very proud moment to be here in the World Cup beating the last champions, it is a good moment for the whole nation and the team. A wonderful performance for the bowlers and the batters," said Mujeeb. The stunning upset gave Afghanistan just their second World Cup win to add to a lone victory over Scotland at the 2015 tournament. They came into Sunday's clash having lost their opening two games in India and on a 14-match losing World Cup streak. After Gurbaz and the recalled Ikram Alikhil, with 58, had given them a decent target to defend, Afghanistan's bowlers went to work, striking at regular intervals. "It was disappointing, having won the toss and elected to bowl," said England skipper Jos Buttler. "Congratulations to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today." Jonny Bairstow (two) was lbw to Fazalhaq Farooqi in the second over before Joe Root was clean bowled by 22-year-old man of the match Mujeeb for 11. Mohammad Nabi got rid of Dawid Malan, who made 140 against Bangladesh, for 32 to precipitate a slide which saw England slump to 138-6. Buttler was clean bowled by seamer Naveen-ul-Haq for nine, Rashid Khan had Liam Livingstone lbw on 10 before Nabi also dismissed Sam Curran (10). England were tied down, at one stage going more than eight overs without hitting a boundary until Brook managed the team's lone six of the innings in the 31st over. Mujeeb sent back Chris Woakes before effectively sealing the game in his next over, having Brook caught behind by Alikhil with England at 169-8. Brook's 66 came off 61 balls with seven fours and a six. Late fireworks from Adil Rashid (20), Reece Topley (15) and Mark Wood (18) only served to take England past the 200-mark. Earlier, Gurbaz, 21, piled up his runs off 57 balls with eight fours and four sixes to register his eighth score in excess of fifty in his ODI career. However, he was furious that he was unable to go on to make a sixth century when he was involved in a disastrous run-out mix-up with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi in the 19th over. Gurbaz failed to make his ground and Buttler whipped off the bails from a throw by substitute fielder David Willey. - Gurbaz run-out anger - An angry Gurbaz smashed his bat into a chair as he departed with his team on 122-3. Gurbaz had needed just 33 balls to get to his half-century as Afghanistan, put into bat, stormed to 100 without loss from 77 deliveries. Once Gurbaz was dismissed, England's spinners dragged the champions back into the contest in the middle overs. The impressive Adil Rashid finished with 3-42 from his 10 overs having initially broken Afghanistan's 114-run opening stand when he had Ibrahim Zadran (28) caught. But Alikhil chimed in with a 66-ball 58 after surviving being hit on the shoulder by a 147 km/h delivery from fast bowler Mark Wood. Mujeeb added 28 to the total off 16 balls as Afghanistan finished strongly. England's seamers endured a day to forget with Sam Curran conceding 46 runs off four overs and new ball bowler Chris Woakes coughing up 41 off his four. England went into Sunday's game after a loss to New Zealand and victory over Bangladesh while Afghanistan suffered heavy defeats by six wickets to Bangladesh and eight wickets to India. Source: BSS

England national cricket team player Jason Roy is going to sign a two-year contract with the Amirican Major League Cricket team Los Angeles Knight Riders for about three hundred thousand pounds. Through a statement, Jason Roy himself confirmed the matter. Indian Premier League's (IPL) four teams own four teams of American Major League Cricket.  The Los Angeles Knight Riders are going to sign a two-year contract with Jason Roy for about three million pounds. There were rumors that Roy had canceled his contract with the England Cricket Board and moved to the United States permanently.  Later, in a statement, Roy said, "Following a bit of unwanted speculation over the last 24 hours, I wanted to clarify that I am not and never will 'walk away from England. Representing my country continues to be my proudest moment as a professional cricketer. I hope to play for England for many more years, that remains my priority. I've had clear and supportive conversations with the ECB about participating in Major league Cricket. The ECB were happy with me to play in the competition as long as they didn't have to pay me for the remainder of the contractual year. As a single format player with no central contract I wanted to take the opportunity to play this competition as there are currently no scheduling conflicts with England. It benefits me as an England player to play as much competitive cricket as possible.Just to be very clear, my priority is England cricket, especially with a World Cup soon upon us. It is for me, and for any player, the greatest honour to receive a cap to play for their country." Jason Roy played for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL. The team that Roy will play for in Major League Cricket is the same franchise.  However, nothing has been officially announced by the team yet. Bangladesh made history to seal the T20 series against England
Bangladesh made history by defeating the T20 world champion England in the second T20 match of the series. Winning the match by 4 wickets, the Tigers won the T20 series against England for the first time.  Earlier, England lose the toss and choose to bat. Taskin Ahmed conceded 10 runs in the first over but he dismissed Dawid Malan in his second over. Malan slashing the ball outside the off stump, Hasan Mahmood makes no mistake as he takes the catch in the third man region.  So, England lost their first wicket in 16 runs. Shakib also brought the success for Bangladesh. Shakib bowled on the off stump. Salt gave a return catch to shakib from this ball.  After Salt's departure, Hasan Mahmud dismissed Jos Buttler at 7.6 overs. In the midst of the innings, England lost their captain. Mehidy Hasan Miraz gave a big blow to England. Mehidy dismissed the in form batter Moeen Ali.  Moeen failed to sweep the ball for a six and gave up the catch at deep mid-wicket. Moeen Ali scored 15 runs off 17 balls. England fell under extreme pressure after losing 4 wickets in 57 runs.  At that time, Bangladesh snatch the momentum. Miraz did exceptionally well with the ball for Bangladesh. He picked up 4 wickets for only 12 runs in 4 overs..  England lost their wickets one after another and did not score a big total. The visitors' innings stopped after crossing hundred runs. Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman also took one wicket each. In reply, chasing the target of 118 runs, Bangladesh reached the target with 7 balls remaining. Mehidy Hasan Miraz earned the player of the match award. Miraz expressed his feeling in a way,"I am really happy. After a long time, i am playing the T20 cricket and was confused with my role, but my captain and team management backed me. I was just trying to bowl in the right areas. I tried to rotate the strike and if there is a bad ball then put it away."  Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan said, "We bowled really well. They had a good start given the conditions, overall a very good team effort. On a tricky game like this, it was important to keep our nerves and Hridoy didn't play the first game, but came back and scored an important 15-odd and Shanto was excellent at the other end." On the other hand, Jos Buttler explained, "It was a different game of T20 cricket, exciting as well but credit to Bangladesh.  There is no good way to get out, but it was a tough wicket to start on and Duckett was doing well, we needed someone to stay with him.  I thought it was an outstanding bowling performance to defend a low total, we bowled without luck as well but really proud of everyone's effort."
