The existing mild to moderate cold wave that is sweeping over Dhaka, Rangpur, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and the districts of Moulavibazar, Barishal, Bhola and Cumilla may continue as mild cold wave and abate from some places, said a Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) bulletin issued for 24 hours commencing 9 am today (Jan 23). "Light rain or drizzle is likely to occur at one or two places over Khulna division and weather may remain dry with partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country. Moderate to thick fog may occur over the country during midnight to morning and it may continue till noon at places," BMD bulletin added. However, Night and day temperature may rise slightly over the country. Country's maximum temperature on Monday was recorded 27.5 degrees Celsius at Teknaf while today's minimum temperature 6.6 degrees Celsius was recorded at Chuadanga.

Classes at all the government primary schools will start from 10:00am till Jan 31 due to the ongoing spell of cold waves.   A mild cold wave is sweeping over Jashore, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Tangail, Madaripur, and Kishoreganj districts, along with Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions. A circular signed by Deputy Secretary Mohammad Kabir Uddin was issued in this regard on Monday (Jan 22).   According to the office order, the teaching schedule of government primary schools has been changed in consideration of the difficulties faced by the students due to the ongoing cold wave across the country. Besides, the directive issued by the government on Jan 16 will continue in effect as usual.   Earlier, on Jan 16, an office order of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education informed that if the temperature drops below 10C in any district, the primary schools will be closed there.  

In a response to the unrelenting cold wave, authorities in Joypurhat and Kurigram districts have announced the closure of all primary and secondary schools. Kurigram DC Mohammad Saidul Arif advised students to stay indoors and continue their studies, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. This shutdown comes after a directive from the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) on January 16. The DSHE granted regional authorities the power to close schools if temperatures fall below 10 degrees Celsius. This could lead to temporary disruptions in air navigation, inland river transport, and road communication due to reduced visibility, according to BMD’s weather bulletin for Friday (Jan 19). A mild cold wave is currently sweeping over the Rangpur division and the districts of Kishoregonj and Noagaon. This chilly weather pattern is expected to persist in these areas, it said. Night temperatures are projected to rise slightly, and daytime temperatures may experience an increase of (1-3)°C across the country. Cold day conditions are likely to prevail in certain areas. At Dhaka, the wind is expected to blow from the West/North-westerly direction at speeds ranging between 8-12 kph, said BMD. The lowest temperature in the country was recorded at 8 degrees Celsius in Dinajpur.

Extreme cold has forced the authorities concerned to shut all primary schools in three districts of the Rangpur division. This decision will remain in effect until further notice. “Only classes will be stopped in all primary schools in Kurigram, Panchagarh, and Dinajpur,” Shah Rezwan Hayat, director general of the Directorate of Primary Education said. “However, teachers will be present for other school work,” he added.   Rangpur division is shivering in bitter cold. People's lives have been disrupted due to thick fog and chilly winds. The temperature has been fluctuating between 8C-11C for the past few days.   In this situation, about 3,500 primary schools in three districts of Rangpur Division have been declared closed.   Instructions have been issued to close primary and secondary schools in districts where temperatures will fall below 10C during the ongoing cold waves. The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education issued separate office orders in this regard on Jan 16.
