Saad Ershad, son of late Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad has won the by-election of Rangpur-3 constituency. He was declared as the winner in the election unofficially. In this election out of 175 voting centers Saad Ershad with symbol ‘plough’ obtained 58 thousand 878 votes. BNP candidate Rita Rahman bagged 16 thousand 947 votes with symbol ‘sheaf of paddy’. On the other hand independent candidate Makbul Shahriar with symbol ‘motor vehicle’ got 14 thousand 984 votes. After the death of the then opposition leader HM Ershad on July 14, the parliament secretariat declared the seat vacant on July 16. The Election Commission then declared the election schedule for the constituency on September 1. AH

Awami League nominated candidate Advocate Rezaul Karim Razu has withdrawn his nomination papers from the by-election of Rangpur sadar constituency. He announced his decision for not running in the election on Monday afternoon. After the announcement local Awami League leaders and activists expressed anger. When Rezaul Karim Razu went to local electoral office to withdraw his nomination, the activists of Awami League and its associate organizations including Chhatra League and Juba League barred him to enter. In this regard Rangpur metropolitan Awami League general secretary Tushar Kanti Mondol said, after the board meeting of party nomination scrutinizing committee Rezaul Karim was given nomination by the Prime Minister. On that day she said that this nomination could be withdrawn as Jatiya Party is a part of our grand alliance. We will go for election under alliance. For the election nine candidates submitted nomination papers from different political parties including Awami League, Jatiya Party, BNP. Of those, nominations of two candidates were cancelled by the Returning Officer due to loan defaulter and not filling up the forms properly. Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad died on July 14 while undergoing treatment. Later on July 16 gazette was published declaring the parliament seat vacant. AH  

BNP nominated candidate Golam Mohammad Siraj has won the Bogura-6 constituency by-election. He defeated Awami League candidate T Zaman Niketa by 57 thousand 445 votes. Though vote taking was peaceful from the morning of Monday but voters’ presence was less. In the election of December 30 in this constituency BNP nominated candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir beat grand alliance candidate by one lakh 66 thousand 663 votes. In this constituency comprising Bogura municipality and sadar upazila the number of total voters is three lakh 87 thousand 458. Of them one lakh 33 thousand 870 voters exercised their rights. Winner Golam Mohammad Siraj with symbol sheaf of paddy got 89 thousand 742 votes. His nearest competitor is Awami League’s T Zaman Niketa wit symbol boat got 32 thousand 297 votes. Former MP and Jatiya Party candidate Nurul Islam Omor got seven thousand 271 votes. Besides, independent candidates Minhaz Mandal got two thousand 920 votes, Syed Kabir Ahmed Mithu got 630 votes, Muslim League’s Mufti Rafiqul Islam got 554 votes and professor Mansur Rahman of Bangladesh Congress got 456 votes. The vote taking continued from 9 am to 5 pm without any break. The overall vote casting was less though voters presence increased in the afternoon. After voting vote counting began at the centers. After that from 6 pm Returning Officer began to declare the results from the control room set up at Shaheed Chandu Stadium. After winning the eleventh national parliament election from this constituency Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir did not take the oath and as a result the seat was declared vacant. After winning the election the number of total seats for BNP in the parliament stands at six. AH  

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury declared Bogura-6 constituency vacant as BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir did not take the oath as a Member of Parliament in the stipulated time. In the by-election of that constituency ruling party Awami League has given nomination to district unit joint general secretary T Zaman Niketa. Besides the party has finalized the list of candidates for the fifth phase upazila elections in 16 upazilas. The decisions were taken at a meeting presided over by party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held at the Ganabhaban on Sunday afternoon. BNP and Jatiya Oikyafront got total 8 seats in the eleventh national parliament election held on December 30 last. The elected members took the oath one by one after going beyond the party decision and later following the party decision except Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. But Mirza Fakhrul did not take the oath within the stipulated time of 90 days. So the Speaker declared his seat vacant according to the rules. In this continuation in the by-election of Bogura-6 constituency Awami League nominated T Zaman Niketa as its candidate for the election. AH

Bangladesh Awami League nominated candidate Atiqul Islam collected nomination form for the mayoral by-election of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). Atiqul Islam’s Coordinator Mizanur Rahman collected the forms from the Returning Officer’s office of DNCC at around 2 pm on Sunday. Mentionable, the DNCC by-election for the mayor post was scheduled to hold on February 26 last year following death of the then mayor Annisul Huq. At that time Awami League nominated Atiqul Islam as their candidate in the election. The DNCC mayoral by-election is scheduled to be held on February 28. AH    

Atiqul Islam has got the nomination from Awami League to run in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor post by-election. Besides, Syeda Jakia Nur Lipi was nominated from the party for by-election of Kishoreganj-1 constituency. She is sister of late minister Syed Ashraful Islam. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader declared their names on Saturday at Prime Minister’s official residence Gonobhaban in the capital. Earlier, the names of these candidates were finalized at the meeting of Awami League parliamentary nomination board and local government nomination board. Later the names were declared at a press conference. The court suspended the by-election of DNCC on January 17 last year. After the hearing of the writ petition the High Court bench comprising Justice Nayeema Haider and Justice Jafar Ahmed delivered the order. At that time Atiqul Islam got the Awami League nomination. In the DNCC election held on April 28, 2015 Annisul Huq elected mayor after getting Awami League nomination. But on November 30, 2017 mayor Annisul Huq died in London and Election Commission declared the mayor post vacant on December 4. On the other hand Syed Ashraful Islam won the eleventh national parliament election from Kishoreganj-1 constituency. As he died on January 3 the Election Commission later declared the seat vacant. The by-election for the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will be held on February 28. Besides the general election in 36 wards which were merged with Dhaka north and south city corporations newly will be held on the same day. The decision was taken at the 43rd Election Commission (EC) meeting on Tuesday. EC source said this. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed and other Commissioners were present in the meeting.   It is known that for the election the last date of nomination paper submission is on January 30. Scrutiny on February 2 and last date of nomination paper withdrawal on February 9. Besides the by-election in Kishoreganj-1 constituency due to the death of Syed Ashraful Islam will be held on February 28. In this seat the last date of nomination paper submission is on January 31. Scrutiny on February 3 and last date of nomination paper withdrawal is on February 10. The schedule for election in the reserved seats will be declared on February 3 which is scheduled to be held in the first week of March. Besides upazila elections will be held in five phases. In the first phase the upazila election will start on March 8 or 9. Then the elections will be held in the second phase on March 18, third phase on March 24 and fourth phase on March 31. The fifth phase election will be held after the holy month of Ramadan. AH   

The mayoral by-election of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and election of 18 wards were suspended by the court. After getting the copy of stay order on Tuesday night the Election Commission (EC) told this. Besides, elections in 18 wards under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) were also suspended for four months. Acting EC Secretary Helal Uddin said, we have received a photocopy of written verdict of the court. There it was mention that DNCC election is suspended for six months and DSCC election is suspended for four months. Earlier on January 17 the court suspended DNCC by-election for three months. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-election will be held on February 26. And March 13 is the date fixed for by-election in Brahmanbaria-1 and Gaibandha-1 constituency. Acting Secretary of Election Commission (EC) Helaluddin Ahmed said these. The decisions were taken at the commission meeting on Thursday. Helaluddin Ahmed said, DNCC election schedule will be declared on January 9. And detail time frame of two parliament seats’ by-election will be declared on February 5. General election will be held on the same day in new 36 wards which were included under Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporation. DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq passed away on November 30 last year while undergoing treatment in United Kingdom. Annisul elected Mayor of DNCC on April 28, 2015 as a candidate of Awami League. He served the post for nearly two years. EC has the obligation to hold election within 90 days as Local Government Division declared the mayoral post vacant on December 1. The obligation of holding by-elections was also created in Brahmanbaria-1 constituency following death of Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sayedul Haque and following death of Member of Parliament Golam Mostafa in Gaibandha-1 (Sundarganj) constituency.     AH
