The state appointed defense counsel of fugitive accused Tarique Rahman has begun placing the arguments in the grenade attack case that killed 24 people and injured many others on August 21, 2004. The attack was originated on the anti terrorism rally of Awami League.

The lawyer AKM Akhtar Hossain presented the arguments for BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman at the court of judge Shahed Nur Uddin of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 in old Dhaka.

While presenting arguments he said that Tarique’s name was not mentioned in the First Information Report or General Diaries.

He said, after taking statements of 61 witnesses the reinvestigation order came in following an appeal. Tarique’s name was mentioned in the charge sheet of the case after reinvestigation. There it was mentioned that he assured the perpetrators of all kinds of administrative back up.

The lawyer claimed that at that period Tarique was not associated with any responsible position in the BNP or four-party alliance government. He said Tarique’s name was mentioned in the case with purposive approach. He will resume his arguments placement on Tuesday.
