‘This verdict is an example for the future’

The High Court has ordered to compensate four crore 61 lakh 75 thousand 452 taka to the family members of Tareque Masud who was killed in a road accident in Manikganj. Catherin Masud, wife of late Tareque Masud expressed her satisfaction over the verdict.

Catherin said to Rtv online on Sunday (3rd December), those who became affected by road accidents will be inspired by the verdict. Through this verdict a process is created which will be an inspiration for the future. We expressed protest against an unjust through this verdict. I hope that implementation of law will be applicable for all people.

She also said, numerous people are giving their lives on the high ways without any reason and family like ours are losing near and dear ones. The affected families will be courageous to protest the unjust following the verdict.

A high court bench of Justice Zinat Ara and Justice Md. Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order on Sunday in a case filed by wife of Tareque Masud seeking compensation. The verdict said that driver, bus owner and the insurance company have to pay the amount.

Of the amount, insurance company will pay 80 thousand taka, bus driver will pay 30 lakh taka and the three bus owners have to share four crore 30 lakh 95 thousand 452 taka. That means each of the bus owner will pay one crore 43 lakh 45 thousand 151 taka.

Five people including film maker Tareque Masud and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ATN News Mishuk Munier were killed in a road accident on Dhaka-Aricha high way in 13th August 2011.

One and half year after the accident a case was filed in Manikganj on behalf of the families of the deceased against bus owner, driver and insurance company under section 128 of Motor Vehicle Ordinance. The case was filed in 13th February 2013. Later the case was shifted to the High Court under public interest following appeal from the plaintiffs.

The verdict came in after hearing of the case of Tareque Masud. The court upheld hearing of another case filed by family members of Mishuk Munier.
