8 to die for murder of publisher Dipon, 2 absconding

Eight accused were sentenced to death including sacked Major Syed Ziaul Haque Zia in connection with the murder case of Jagriti publisher’s proprietor Faisal Arefin Dipon. Judge of the Dhaka anti terrorism special tribunal Md. Mojibur Rahman handed down the verdict on Wednesday.
On January 24 the court fixed the date for delivering verdict today.
The other convicted accused are Akram Hossain, Mainul Hasan Shamim alias Samir alias Imran, Abdus Sabur Samad alias Sujan alias Raju Alias Saad, Khairul Islam alias Jamil alias Jisan, Abu Siddik Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajik alias Shahab, Mozammel Hussain alias Saimon alias Shahriar and Sheikh Abdullah alias Jubayer alias Jayed alias Jabed alias Abu Omaer. Of the accused Zia and Akram are absconding.
Mentionable, on October 31, 2015 Faisal Arefin Dipon was hacked to death by the miscreants at his Jagriti Prokashani office at Shahbag Aziz Super Market in the capital. On the same day the miscreants entered the Shuddho Swar prokashani at Lalmatia and tried to kill proprietor Ahmen Rashid Tutul, writer Ranodipam Basu and engineer Abdur Rahman. After the murder of Dipon, his wife Razia Rahman filed a case with Shahbag police station. On November 15, 2018 Investigation Officer of Detective Branch and Assistant Commissioner Fazlur Rahman submitted the charge sheet. The court on October 13, 2019 framed the charge against eight accused.

4 burnt in Malibagh restaurant gas cylinder fire
Four people were burnt in a gas cylinder explosion at a restaurant in the capital's Malibagh.
The injured were admitted to the burns unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The employee of the hotel Sabuj, (24) Maruf (16) and Julhas (18) Abdul Hannan, (40) was burnt in the incident.
The incident took place at Shahjalal Hotel at Malibagh intersection on Wednesday evening (March 20).
DMCH Police Outpost In-Charge, Bachchu Mia confirmed the matter. Quoting the duty doctor of DMCH, he said, "The hands, face and legs of the victims were burnt. They have been kept under observation. The condition of the victims is not critical. ’
Demra clothing warehouse fire under control after 9 hours
Fire service has managed to douse a fire at a cloth warehouse in the capital's Demra area after nine hours of frantic efforts.
However, efforts are still underway to completely extinguish the fire.
The fire was brought under control around 8:30 am on Friday, said Lt. Col Rezaul Karim, Director of Fire Service (Development and Training).
Earlier on Thursday (March 21) at 11:30 pm, the fire took place at a clothing warehouse in the Bhanga area of Demra. Sports clothing was kept in the warehouse.
Fire breaks out at City Group's board manufacturing factory
A fire has broken out in a super-board manufacturing factory of City Group in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj. At least, 10 units of fire service are working to control the fire.
The fire broke out on Sunday (March 24) at noon. No casualties have been reported so far. Fire Service Control Room Duty Officer Faruk confirmed the matter.
Gazaria Upazila Fire Service Station Officer Rifat Mallik said that the factory produces various variants of hardboards. On receiving the news of the fire, we reached the spot immediately and started the work of controlling the fire. At present, 10 units of fire service are working.
Korail Slum Fire: Slum dwellers lose everything
Many left homeless as fire breaks out at Korail slum. Hundreds of houses have been burnt in the fire.
The fire broke out Sunday afternoon (March 24). The fire service received information about the fire in the slum at 4:05 pm. Later, eight units of fire service brought the fire under control at 5:33 pm.
More than 200 houses of the slum and the furniture used by the slum dwellers were burnt in the fire. There's still smoke coming from there. Many people are crying after losing everything in the fire. Some are trying to find out if anything is intact in the rubble.
About 200 houses were burnt in the fire. The fire spread so fast that no one could take any furniture out of the house, the victims said.
Metro rail to operate after 9pm from 16 Ramadan
Dhaka Metro rail authority said metro rail will run for an additional hour from 16 Ramadan considering the passengers demand ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
With the increased operations, the last train from Motijheel will depart at 9:40pm and from Uttara at 9:20pm.
However, DMTCL, has decided to stop operations of metro rail on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL) managing director MAN Siddique said to the reporters that they have a target to carry about 500,000 passengers a day. Metro rail will increase it's operations, metro rail will run 194 times on both sides during this time.
Metro rail schedule extended by an hour
Dhaka Metro rail authority has decided to run the metro rail even after 9 pm. The decision will be effective from Wednesday, 16th Ramadan.
The decision will remain in force until the day before Eid-ul-Fitr. Metro rail will remain closed on the Eid day.
Managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), M. A. N. Siddique, disclosed the information at a press briefing on Tuesday (March 26).
He said that the last train will leave Uttara North Station at 9:00 pm from Wednesday. The last train will leave Motijheel station at 9:40 pm. He added the metro rail movement time will be extended by one hour from tomorrow (March 26) till the day before Eid-ul-Fitr. Another 10 trains will run in the extra time.
3.7 km of Bangabandhu Rail Bridge visible
The construction work of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Rail Bridge, one of the mega projects of the country, on the Jamuna river has been completed 80 percent.
3.7 kilometers of the 4.8 kilometers long Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Rail Bridge is now visible. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the mega project once it is completed by December this year.

At present, 38 trains can run through the Bangabandhu Bridge, 68 trains will be able to run daily after the opening of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge. At the same time, a broad gauge railway project is being constructed between Chilahati in Nilphamari and Chilahati border to establish rail connectivity with India as an international route.
At the same time, the economy of the northern part of the country will be accelerated. The construction work of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Rail Bridge is progressing rapidly over the Jamuna.
Trains can run at a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour on this dual gauge bridge.
Total 49 pillars out of 50 pillars of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Rail Bridge has been completed and only one pillar is yet to be installed.
