8 to die for murder of publisher Dipon, 2 absconding

Eight accused were sentenced to death including sacked Major Syed Ziaul Haque Zia in connection with the murder case of Jagriti publisher’s proprietor Faisal Arefin Dipon. Judge of the Dhaka anti terrorism special tribunal Md. Mojibur Rahman handed down the verdict on Wednesday.

On January 24 the court fixed the date for delivering verdict today.

The other convicted accused are Akram Hossain, Mainul Hasan Shamim alias Samir alias Imran, Abdus Sabur Samad alias Sujan alias Raju Alias Saad, Khairul Islam alias Jamil alias Jisan, Abu Siddik Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajik alias Shahab, Mozammel Hussain alias Saimon alias Shahriar and Sheikh Abdullah alias Jubayer alias Jayed alias Jabed alias Abu Omaer. Of the accused Zia and Akram are absconding.

Mentionable, on October 31, 2015 Faisal Arefin Dipon was hacked to death by the miscreants at his Jagriti Prokashani office at Shahbag Aziz Super Market in the capital. On the same day the miscreants entered the Shuddho Swar prokashani at Lalmatia and tried to kill proprietor Ahmen Rashid Tutul, writer Ranodipam Basu and engineer Abdur Rahman. After the murder of Dipon, his wife Razia Rahman filed a case with Shahbag police station. On November 15, 2018 Investigation Officer of Detective Branch and Assistant Commissioner Fazlur Rahman submitted the charge sheet. The court on October 13, 2019 framed the charge against eight accused.
