Indian fisherman lands in Rajshahi jail

An Indian fisherman who entered Bangladesh illegally in Charghat upazila under Rajshahi on Thursday was sent to jail on Friday as two cases were filed against him for trespassing and catching hilsa.
The fisherman was identified as Pranab Mondol, a citizen of Sahebnagar Chhirachar in Jalangi area of Murshidabad district of India.
Samit Kumar Kundu, officer-in-charge of Charghat Police Station, said Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Charghat Border Outpost (BOP) Habildar Humayun Kabir filed two cases against Pranab for entering Bangladesh territory and catching hilsa illegally.
BGB handed over Pranab to Charghat Police Station on Thursday night and was sent to the court around 11am on Friday from where he was taken to Rajshahi Central Jail.
On Thursday, BGB said its members were forced to fire back in self-defence after being attacked by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the Rajshahi border that led to the death of a BSF man.
In a press release, the BGB said the BSF members intruded into Bangladesh territory and tried to snatch an Indian fisherman detained while illegally fishing in the Padma River.
“BSF members first opened fire while fleeing from Bangladesh territory towards India in the morning,” the release said.
The incident took place 650 yards inside Bangladesh territory in Shahariaghat Balughat of the river under Charghat upazila in Rajshahi, said the BGB press release.

Metro rail schedule extended by an hour
Dhaka Metro rail authority has decided to run the metro rail even after 9 pm. The decision will be effective from Wednesday, 16th Ramadan.
The decision will remain in force until the day before Eid-ul-Fitr. Metro rail will remain closed on the Eid day.
Managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), M. A. N. Siddique, disclosed the information at a press briefing on Tuesday (March 26).
He said that the last train will leave Uttara North Station at 9:00 pm from Wednesday. The last train will leave Motijheel station at 9:40 pm. He added the metro rail movement time will be extended by one hour from tomorrow (March 26) till the day before Eid-ul-Fitr. Another 10 trains will run in the extra time.
3.7 km of Bangabandhu Rail Bridge visible
The construction work of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Rail Bridge, one of the mega projects of the country, on the Jamuna river has been completed 80 percent.
3.7 kilometers of the 4.8 kilometers long Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Rail Bridge is now visible. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the mega project once it is completed by December this year.
There will be a revolutionary change in the communication and transport system of the country with North Bengal. In addition to increasing internal rail connectivity, Bangladesh will be able to connect with the Trans-Asian Railway.
Tanvirul Islam, chief engineer of Chief Engineer, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge Construction Project (BSMRBCP), said It will be possible to install the entire span by next May.
At present, 38 trains can run through the Bangabandhu Bridge, 68 trains will be able to run daily after the opening of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge. At the same time, a broad gauge railway project is being constructed between Chilahati in Nilphamari and Chilahati border to establish rail connectivity with India as an international route.
At the same time, the economy of the northern part of the country will be accelerated. The construction work of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Rail Bridge is progressing rapidly over the Jamuna.
Trains can run at a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour on this dual gauge bridge.
Total 49 pillars out of 50 pillars of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Rail Bridge has been completed and only one pillar is yet to be installed.
Govt to recruit 10000 primary teachers by June
State Minister for Primary and Mass Education, Rumana Ali said that the recruitment of 10,000 primary teachers will be completed by June this year.
She said this while visiting Comilla Victoria Government College center in the third phase of primary teacher recruitment examination of Dhaka and Chattogram divisions.
Rumana Ali said that the ministry is on high alert so that no applicant can cheat. All measures have been taken for a fair exam.
However, In the third phase of primary teacher recruitment examination 32,199 candidates are taking part in Cumilla district. Of them, 14,767 are female and 17,432 are male candidates.
First consignment of Indian onions arrives
The first consignment of 1,650 tonnes of onion from India has arrived on Sunday (March 31) through the Darshana land port in Bangladesh.
Mirza Quamrul Hasan, manager of Darshana International land port, said the first consignment of onions imported by Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has been received at around 5:30 pm.
The loaded wagons will be unloaded at night and taken to Sirajganj bazar. The imported onions it will be sold at Tk 40 per kg in Dhaka and Chattogram markets.
Fire breaks out in several parked buses in Dhaka's Demra
A fire broke out in the garage of a Volvo bus in the capital's Demra area. Six units of fire service are working to control the fire.
The fire service received information about the fire at 8:50 pm on Monday (April 1).
Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector of Fire Service's media cell confirmed the information. He said the fire service left for Konapara area of Dharmakpara in Demra at 8:59 pm after receiving the news of the bus fire. Two units of Demra Fire Station are working to control the fire and four units from Siddique Bazar have left.
14 buses gutted in fire in Dhaka's Demra
At least 14 Volvo buses were gutted in a fire at a garage in the capital's Demra.
The incident took place at Konapara on Monday night. Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector of Fire Service's media cell confirmed that around 8:45pm Fire Service brought the blaze under control.
The burnt buses belonged to a transport company named London Express. The fire was brought under control after an hour's effort.
Five units of fire service brought the fire under control. No casualties were reported in the fire.
Two banks robbed in 15 hours in Bandarban
Robbers looted Sonali Bank's Ruma branch in Bandarban last night. They also kidnaped the bank manager Nizam Uddin.
Meanwhile, Two branches of Sonali Bank and Krishi Bank have been attacked in Thanchi of Bandarban today (3 April), about 15 hours after Sonali Bank's Ruma branch was attacked by armed robbers yesterday.
The incident took place around 12:30pm on Wednesday (March 3), said Thanchi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jasim Uddin.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said in a press briefing that members of the militant outfit Kuki Chin are involved in the bank robberies in Bandarban.
The Kuki Chin robbers has looted around Tk2.5 lakh from Krishi Bank's Thanchi branch, according to Thanchi branch manager Hlaswithwai Marma.
On the other hand the robbers took Tk15 lakh from the Sonali Bank's Thanchi branch, according to Deputy General Manager Md Osman Ghani of the bank.
However, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Police are carrying out operations to capture the culprits.
For security measures, transactions at six branches of Sonali Bank in Bandarban have been halted until the situation is under control.
