Forced marriage after gang-rape; Pabna OC withdrawn, SI suspended

Officer in Charge of Pabna sadar police station Obaidul Haque was withdrawn and Sub Inspector Ekramul Haque was suspended on temporary basis over the incident of forcing a gang-rape victim to marry one of the rapists at the police station.

Police Super of Pabna Sheikh Rafiqul Islam said that the decision was taken by the higher authority at around 11 am on Thursday.

Besides, other two accused in the case- Zakir Hossain (35) and Sanju Mollah (22) were arrested. Police arrested them from Tebunia area on early Thursday.

Mentionable, the victim, mother of three children, alleged that on August 29 neighbor Rasel Ahmed along with one companion raped her at Rasel’s home. Two days after the incident they took her at an office and four to five people raped her after keeping hostage. Later the housewife filed a written complaint with Pabna police station. Following the complaint police detained Rasel and on that night they forced the victim to marry Rasel.

On the other hand, accused Rasel said, police forced me to marry her after threatening to put me on remand. I am a victim of conspiracy.

Saidul Haque, Officer in Charge of Pabna sadar police station said on Monday, at first the women had no complain. Later following consensus over the family the marriage was arranged. I have no information whether the marriage was arranged at the police station or not.

But the OC acknowledged that the victim filed a rape case against Rasel and his associates on Monday noon.
