Bangladesh, India fight common enemy: Shringla

Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla has said Bangladesh and India share the historical legacy of fighting and winning the Liberation War together in 1971 wherein armies from both the nations fought and defeated a common enemy.

“We recognize and honor the contributions and sacrifices of the Muktijoddhas (freedom fighters),” he said while addressing Muktijoddha Scholarship cheque distribution ceremony at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College in Barishal on Saturday. Reports UNB.

The High Commissioner said freedom fighters have been their lasting friends and they appreciate the role freedom fighters play in keeping the Liberation War spirit alive.

“These are eternal bonds, permanently cemented by the blood and sacrifices of our martyrs. I pay my tributes to the martyrs of both countries who have laid down their lives during the independence struggle,” Shringla said.

He said the recipients of the scholarship scheme are the future of Bangladesh. “You should be very proud to have been born in the family of Muktijoddhas and have inherited their legacy.”

He said it is a unique honor but carries with itself the onus of carrying forward their legacy and spirit into the future. “I’m also sure you all will evolve to be the goodwill ambassadors between the future generations of both the countries.”

Mayor-elect, Barishal City Corporation Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, Sector Commander (Sector 9 during Liberation War) Captain Mahfuz Alam Beg, Chairman, Muktijoddha Academy Trust Dr Abul Azad, Members of Parliament, senior freedom fighters were present.

The High Commissioner said Bangladesh and India share a common heritage, cultural linkage and have shed blood together on the battlefield.

The Muktijoddha scholarship scheme is one such initiative launched in 2006. Under the scheme, over 12,621 students have already been awarded scholarship and an amount of Tk 21 crore has been utilized.

The Nutan Muktijoddha scholarship scheme was introduced in 2017. Under the scheme, 10,000 students will be awarded scholarships in Undergraduate and Higher Secondary streams over the next five years and an amount of Tk 35 crore will be utilized for the purpose. Once the old and new schemes are combined, a total of Tk 56 crore will be spent by the government of India for the Muktijoddha scholarship programme.

Some 120 students of Barishal division were handed over scholarship cheques. Students in undergraduate category were awarded a lump sum amount of Tk 50,000 and in the Higher Secondary category Tk 20,000 respectively.

Trains can run at a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour on this dual gauge bridge. Total 49 pillars out of 50 pillars of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Rail Bridge has been completed and only one pillar is yet to be installed.

Govt to recruit 10000 primary teachers by June

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education, Rumana Ali said that the recruitment of 10,000 primary teachers will be completed by June this year. She said this while visiting Comilla Victoria Government College center in the third phase of primary teacher recruitment examination of Dhaka and Chattogram divisions. Rumana Ali said that the ministry is on high alert so that no applicant can cheat. All measures have been taken for a fair exam. However, In the third phase of primary teacher recruitment examination 32,199 candidates are taking part in Cumilla district. Of them, 14,767 are female and 17,432 are male candidates.

First consignment of Indian onions arrives

The first consignment of 1,650 tonnes of onion from India has arrived on Sunday (March 31) through the Darshana land port in Bangladesh. Mirza Quamrul Hasan, manager of Darshana International land port, said the first consignment of onions imported by Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has been received at around 5:30 pm. The loaded wagons will be unloaded at night and taken to Sirajganj bazar. The imported onions it will be sold at Tk 40 per kg in Dhaka and Chattogram markets.

Fire breaks out in several parked buses in Dhaka's Demra

A fire broke out in the garage of a Volvo bus in the capital's Demra area. Six units of fire service are working to control the fire. However, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Police are carrying out operations to capture the culprits. For security measures, transactions at six branches of Sonali Bank in Bandarban have been halted until the situation is under control.

Fire breaks out at Khulna jute mill

A fire breaks out at a jute mill of Salam Jute Mills in Khulna's Rupsha. Eighteen units of fire service are working to to control the blaze. Earlier on Wednesday (April 3), the fire broke out around 5:30pm at the jute mill owned by Salam Jute Mill, said Md Abdul Quadir of the Khulna Fire Service control room.
