Papul’s parliamentary constituency declared vacant
The post of parliamentary membership (MP) of Shahid Islam Papul from Lakhsmipur-2 constituency has been announced vacant. The parliament secretariat has issued a notification in this regard on Monday.
The notification said, as Shahid Islam had been awarded four years rigorous imprisonment by a Kuwaiti criminal court for moral degradation, so he is not eligible to remain in his post of Member of Parliament according to the section 66(2)(Gha) of the Bangladesh constitution.
It is known that the decision was finalized by the parliament Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury. Earlier the Speaker discussed the matter with concerned personalities. At that time the verdict copy of the Papul’s case sent from Kuwait was reviewed.
The 61-page copies of the verdict written in Arabic and English were sent to Speaker’s office and home ministry by the foreign ministry on Thursday.
A Kuwaiti court awarded four years rigorous imprisonment to Papul over allegation of human trafficking and money laundering on January 28. He was also fimed 19 lakh Kuwaiti Dinar equivalent to over 53 crore taka.
Papul was arrested on June 6 last year from his Kuwait residence. He was awarded the punishment within seven and half months of arrest and three and half months of beginning the judicial procedures.
