Covid-19: Bangladesh sees 1681 new cases, 25 deaths

Bangladesh on Thursday reported 1,681 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the total caseload to 404,760.

Meanwhile, 25 more patients died from Covid-19, taking the fatalities to 5,886.

So far, 321,281 patients (79.38 percent) have recovered -- 1,548 in the last 24 hours.

The fatality rate in Bangladesh is 1.45 percent, the Directorate General of Health Services said.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8. The number of cases reached the 300,000-mark on August 26. The first death was reported on March 18 and the death toll exceeded 5,000 on Sept 22.

So far, 2,310,589 tests have been carried out, including 14,268 new tests, and 17.52 percent of them have turned out positive.

Bangladesh is seeing 2376.66 infections, 1886.49 recoveries and 34.56 deaths per million.

Currently, there are 77,593 active coronavirus cases in the country.

Of the total victims, 4,529 are men and 1,357 are women. Of the latest 25 victims, 20 are aged above 50 years, three between 41 and 50 years and two others are aged between 21 and 30 years.

So far, 3,053 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,169 in Chattogram, 370 in Rajshahi, 466 in Khulna, 199 in Barishal, 242 in Sylhet, 262 in Rangpur and 122 in Mymensingh.

Across the country, 12,051 people are now in isolation and 39,615 in quarantine.

Global situation

The global confirmed cases surpassed 44 million on Thursday, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

The data show that Covid-19 cases reached 44,400,318 with 1,173,270 fatalities.

The US has registered over 227,663 deaths and more than 8.8 million infections – the highest in the world.

Brazil, which has the world's second-highest Covid-19 death toll and the third-largest number of cases, has registered 5,468,270 cases with 158,456 deaths as of Thursday.

India has recorded a total of 7,990,322 cases while its death toll reached 120,010, JHU data showed.

Meanwhile, a massive second wave of Covid-19 infections has prompted European countries to tighten their preventive measures, including reimposing lockdowns, to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

The National Eidgah Maidan in the capital is being prepared for the main Eid-ul-Fitr jamaat (congregation). The main congregation of Eid-ul-Fitr will be held at 8:30 am. Md Abu Bakr Siddque, public relation officer of Religious Affairs Ministry confirmed this information to the media on Monday (March 25). However, But if the weather is unfavourable, for any reason, the main congregation of Eid-ul-Fitr will be held at National Mosque Baitul Mukarram at 9 am. Besides, a total of five Eid congregations will be held at National Mosque Baitul Mukarram. The first congregation will be held at 7 am. Abu Bakar Siddique said that the last congregation will be held at 10:45 am.

Nation set to celebrate 54th Independence Day

The whole nation is set to celebrate its' 54th Independence today (26 March) in a befitting manner. The government has taken elaborate programmes at the national level to celebrate the day. The programmes to celebrate 54th Independence day will begin with gun salutes early in the morning. All government, semi-government, autonomous and private institutaion will hoist the national flag atop with the rises of the sun. However, The National Martyrs' Memorial at Savar will be the main venue of the day's celebration. President Mohammad Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will place floral wreaths early in the morning as a mark of profound respect to the memories of the martyrs of 1971. In that day people from all walks of life, including freedom fighters, members of the diplomatic corps, leaders of different political parties, social, cultural and professional bodies, will also place floral wreaths at the national memorial.

Saudi Arabia to invest $1.4 bn in Bangladesh's energy sector

Saudi Arabia's International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC), has signed a $1.4 billion financing plan with the Government of Bangladesh. Officials of ITFC and Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), the state-owned fuel oil import and marketing authority, were present at the signing ceremony. According to ITFC, the plan will enable the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) to import petroleum products. The ITFC also said the financing aimed at developing Bangladesh's energy infrastructure to develop the country. Meanwhile, The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said that this money will be invested in various sectors related to the development of the energy sector of Bangladesh.The signing ceremony took place during a official visit by a high-level delegation from Bangladesh to the ITFC headquarters.

Khaleda Zia's jail term extended by 6 months

The government has extended the release period of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia by six months. Her release has been extended for the eighth time by executive order of the government. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday (March 27). Earlier on March 20, Law Minister Anisul Huq said Khaleda Zia's release period would be extended by six months on two conditions. During the extended period, Khaleda Zia will receive treatment from her own residence in Dhaka and she will not be able to leave the country during this time.

Prices of diesel, kerosene cut by Tk 2.25 per litre

The government has reduced the price of diesel and kerosene by Tk 2.25 per liter in line wwith the automated price formula. According to the new price, diesel and kerosene will be sold at Tk 106 per liter. The new prices will be effective from April 1. However, the prices of octane and petrol are the same as before. Accordingly, octane will be sold at Tk 126 per liter and petrol at Tk 122 per liter. The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources issued a gazette notification in this regard on Sunday (March 31). The price has been fixed in the light of the automatic pricing guidelines of petroleum fuel across the country. Earlier, On February 29, the government issued a gazette notification over “Fuel Pricing Guidelines”. Later, on March 7, the notification of adjusting the price of fuel oil was published according to the first pricing formula.

Intelligence agencies working to strengthen security: Home Minister

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said police and intelligence agencies are working to strengthen security across the country ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. He said this after a meeting for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr at the Home Ministry conference room at the Secretariat on Monday (April 1). The minister said all measures will be taken to maintain law and order across the country during Eid-ul-Fitr. Police and intelligence agencies will be deployed alongside uniformed police to prevent theft, robbery, hijacking, extortion and terrorist activities. He said police patrols will be in all important places, big cities and ports, including the diplomatic areas of the capital. Besides, special measures will be taken to maintain law and order on waterways.
