Bangladesh invites US to tap potentials of offshore blocks

Bangladesh has invited the United States to explore opportunities in offshore blocks as Bangladesh identified 20 blocks through maritime boundary settlement.

The US side assured Bangladesh of encouraging their companies to invest in Bangladesh.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, while briefing reporters after bilateral meeting with visiting US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen E. Biegun, said they discussed it apart from other issues.

Responding to a question, the State Minister said this is an open invitation but not for any specific US company.

He said the two sides discussed ways to ensure faster economic recovery for Bangladesh in the post Covid-19 s scenario and the US side encouraged for larger discussion on Free Trade Agreement considering Bangladesh's growing economy.

Bangladesh also sought preferential trade support for its products from the US to accelerate the economic recovery during the post-Covid era.

The Bangladesh side also raised the Rohingya repatriation issue and laid emphasis on quick repatriation of Rohingyas to their place of origin in Rakhine State.

The US also reiterated its commitment to work to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

They intend to engage themselves in this effort after the national election of Myanmar in November, said the State Minister.

The US government has assured Bangladesh of taking steps so that US vaccines can be made available after successful production. The visa issue also came up for discussions.

On Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS), he said Bangladesh supports an inclusive, peaceful and participatory region.

The US side expressed satisfaction that an American company has started supplying LNG to Bangladesh.

The US Deputy Secretary of State arrived in the capital on Wednesday to discuss Bangladesh-US cooperation on Covid-19 response, recovery efforts and sustainable economic development.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen received the US Deputy Secretary of State upon his arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport from New Delhi, India after wrapping up his three-day visit there.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Miller was also present, an official said.

Biegun will meet Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Thursday morning and discuss issues of mutual interest and issues related to Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS), a senior official told UNB.

He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Gonobhaban at 12pm on Thursday.

During discussions with the Bangladesh side, Biegun will reaffirm the Bangladesh-US partnership.

The Deputy Secretary’s engagements in Bangladesh will focus on "advancing the common vision of a free, open, inclusive, peaceful, and secure Indo-Pacific region" with shared prosperity for all, according to the Office of the Spokesperson at the US Department of State.

Saudi Arabia to invest $1.4 bn in Bangladesh's energy sector

Saudi Arabia's International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC), has signed a $1.4 billion financing plan with the Government of Bangladesh. Officials of ITFC and Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), the state-owned fuel oil import and marketing authority, were present at the signing ceremony. According to ITFC, the plan will enable the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) to import petroleum products. The ITFC also said the financing aimed at developing Bangladesh's energy infrastructure to develop the country. Meanwhile, The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said that this money will be invested in various sectors related to the development of the energy sector of Bangladesh.The signing ceremony took place during a official visit by a high-level delegation from Bangladesh to the ITFC headquarters.

Khaleda Zia's jail term extended by 6 months

The government has extended the release period of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia by six months. Her release has been extended for the eighth time by executive order of the government. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday (March 27). Earlier on March 20, Law Minister Anisul Huq said Khaleda Zia's release period would be extended by six months on two conditions. During the extended period, Khaleda Zia will receive treatment from her own residence in Dhaka and she will not be able to leave the country during this time.

Prices of diesel, kerosene cut by Tk 2.25 per litre

The government has reduced the price of diesel and kerosene by Tk 2.25 per liter in line wwith the automated price formula. According to the new price, diesel and kerosene will be sold at Tk 106 per liter. The new prices will be effective from April 1. However, the prices of octane and petrol are the same as before. Accordingly, octane will be sold at Tk 126 per liter and petrol at Tk 122 per liter. The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources issued a gazette notification in this regard on Sunday (March 31). The price has been fixed in the light of the automatic pricing guidelines of petroleum fuel across the country. Earlier, On February 29, the government issued a gazette notification over “Fuel Pricing Guidelines”. Later, on March 7, the notification of adjusting the price of fuel oil was published according to the first pricing formula.

Intelligence agencies working to strengthen security: Home Minister

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said police and intelligence agencies are working to strengthen security across the country ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. He said this after a meeting for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr at the Home Ministry conference room at the Secretariat on Monday (April 1). The minister said all measures will be taken to maintain law and order across the country during Eid-ul-Fitr. Police and intelligence agencies will be deployed alongside uniformed police to prevent theft, robbery, hijacking, extortion and terrorist activities. He said police patrols will be in all important places, big cities and ports, including the diplomatic areas of the capital. Besides, special measures will be taken to maintain law and order on waterways.

Court accepts charge sheet against Dr Yunus, 13 others

A Dhaka court accepted the charge-sheet filed in a case against against Dr Yunus, 13 others for allegedly embezzling Tk 25 crore from the company. Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Ash Shams Zaglul Hossain passed the order today (April 2) for further proceedings the case was sent to Dhaka Special Judge Court-4. The court fixed May 2 for the next hearing of the case. Grameen Telecom director, Md Shahjahan, one of the accused who failed to appear before the court on this day, the court canceled his bail and issued an arrest warrant. Earlier, Dr. Yunus and other accused appeared in the court around 1:45 pm. On May 30 last year, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against 13 people, including Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, for embezzling Tk 25.22 crore from Grameen Telecom's workers' welfare fund. Gulshan Anowar Pradhan, Deputy Director of Anti- Corruption Commission filed the case. On February 1, ACC Deputy Director Gulshan Anwar Prodhan, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against 14 people, including Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

DMP to provide special security in Dhaka ahead of Eid

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, Md Habibur Rahman has said there is no threat to the upcoming Eid ul-Fitr. Besides, special security measures have been taken for 24 hours in Dhaka during the Eid holidays. He said this at a press conference after visiting the Eid market at Bashundhara Shopping Complex in the capital on Tuesday noon (April 2). DMP commissioner said, "There is no threat centering the Eid festival. As The capital becomes empty during the long Eid holidays. Security has been arranged keeping this in mind in the security plan." He said about 1.5 crore people will go out of Dhaka during the Eid holidays. At this time Dhaka city remains empty.
