US and EU welcomed interim government
The United States and the European Union (EU) welcomed the new interim government of Bangladesh led by Nobel Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
On Thursday (August 8), US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters that We welcome Dr Yunus' call to stop the recent violence.
He said the interim government and Dr. Yunus want to create a democratic future for Bangladeshi people. So we are ready to work with the interim government Dr Yunus.
He said that Helen LaFave, the highest-ranking diplomat of the United States in Bangladesh, attended the swearing-in ceremony of the advisers and is in contact with the interim government.
Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) also welcomed the new interim government of Bangladesh. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the EU is keen to work with the new administration in Bangladesh. They will be assisted in the complex task of democratic transfer of power. This process should be peaceful and participatory.
It is to be noted that Sheikh Hasina fled the country by resigning from the post of Prime Minister on August 5 in the face of a continuous student movement. Then on August 6, President Md. Sahabuddin organized a meeting with the head of the three forces and the coordinators of the student movement at Bangabhaban. It was decided to form the next interim government headed by Dr Muhammad Yunus.
Then a new interim government of Bangladesh was formed on Thursday with Dr Yunus as the chief adviser.
