Cash incentives for leather industry to continue for more 5 years

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has assured that the existing tax and cash incentive facilities will continue for more five years.

She said this in the inaugural ceremony of the country’s biggest trade show for leather industry ‘Leather tech Bangladesh’ on Thursday. The international exhibition of leather goods was inaugurated from Ganabhaban through video conference.

The Prime Minister upheld government initiatives for development of the industry highlighting the contribution of this second largest export sector in our economy.

She said, leather industry is an immeasurable prospective sector and by the time it is recommended as the second largest export sector of the country.

The Prime Minister said, for expansion of this industry government is providing different facilities like credit and subsidy. To step up the industry businessmen will be provided more facilities. She also urged foreigners to invest in this sector.

To the businessmen she said that the products that are made from this industry should be maintained by international quality. New markets can be found out if that were done. We want that the foreigners would come forward to invest in this sector for more expansion of the industry.

She said, every day a large number of animals are slaughtered in the country except the festival of sacrifice.

In the program president of leather goods, footwear manufacturing and exporters’ organization (LFMEB) Saiful Islam delivered the welcome speech.

Commerce Minister Tofael Ahmed delivered his speech as the special guest. Besides, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam delivered the recorded speech.

The exhibition has started from Thursday at the Bashundhara International Convention City in the capital. It will continue till 18th November. The exhibition will be opened for all from 11 am to 7 pm everyday. 250 organizations of 15 countries of the world including Bangladesh are taking part in the exhibition.

Machineries, components, chemicals and accessories of the leather, leather goods and footwear industries were introduced in the exhibition.

In the current fiscal year the cash incentive rate for leather goods export was increased from 12.5 percent to 15 percent. Besides, cash incentive rate for crust and finished leather export from leather industrial city was fixed at 10 percent.

To implement Vision 2021 the target for the income through leather export was fixed at 500 to 600 crore taka.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared leather goods including footwear as product of the year 2017.
